Missouri Republicans push birth certificate questions to oppose 'tyranny'

Fifteen Republican members of the Missouri General Assembly have signed on to a state constitutional amendment that appears aimed at advancing the claims of the fringe movement that doubts President Barack Obama's eligibility to serve as president.

The language is contained in a proposed "voter’s bill of rights," which would serve "as a defense against corruption, fraud, and tyranny."

The proposed amendment states:

For candidates who are required by the Constitution of the United States to be natural born citizens, the secretary of state shall request an official copy of the candidate’s birth certificate. Other certifications, such as a certificate of live birth, shall not be accepted. Should any candidate fail to provide an official birth certificate within thirty days of the request by the secretary of state, his or her name shall not be placed on the ballot.

The Birthers, as they're known, have focused on the State of Hawaii's refusal to release the original of Obama's birth certificate, as opposed to official copies; Hawaii state law bars the release of the original.

State Rep. Robert Cooper wasn't immediately available

No matter where you stand on this issue...how is this a "fringe idea"?

Looking to 2012, every state needs to do this.

Obama could put this to rest by producing a real birth certificate.

However, he is so far reluctant to do so

I am hoping that the powers that be on wall street will join with the fringers and use this to get this crazy man out of office. i hate robert gibbs and his sneering giggles every day while America crumbles.

i think Obama has mental problems. the way he treated the british pm yesterday was unthinkable. he really thinks what he says at the moment he is saying it it totally true. In the morning he says the grass is blue. in the evening he says the grass is pink. and the MSM just goes along with it.

we are screwed if we don’t get him out of office soon.

If there are no eligibility problems, then this is no threat, so why the attempted tinfoiling?

It’s all starting to sound oddly familiar, like the nativist fringer xenophobe crap that was flung at people who opposed amnesty.

Seems like I’m reading less and less comments from the “wet towel” brigade here on FR saying this is “a waste of time”. With every downtick of the stock market I hope to see this issue ratching up another notch.

“For candidates who are required by the Constitution of the United States to be natural born citizens, the secretary of state shall request an official copy of the candidate’s birth certificate. “

What is the purpose of having the stipulation of being born an American citizen if no proof is ever rendered?

barry’s birth certificate may not deem him unable to be POTUS, however, it is apparent he is hiding something.

Why on earth would most of his records be closed?

Trust but verify. I don't believe he is stupid enough to try to pull off hiding a Kenyan birth, but I do wonder why he won't show the original. I do believe the each state should require identity proof and citizenship proof of all candidates.

If this ends up true, there will be no way to stop the U.S. from fragmenting.

This question about the “Obamassiah” keeps popping up. I don’t know about it, but I’m guessing that it would be a matter of some degree of fear of a race war if this is a valid grievance and is corrected. - It’s surely an important Constitutional question and deserves to be answered in a sober and legitimate way and not in an arrogant refusal to cooperate (if that is what’s truly happening). He wasn’t elected Dictator. In any event, whatever the extraordinary particulars surrounding his “historic” ascension to power, IF anything is un-Constitutional, I hope it will be corrected in any event.
