Downing Street was left scrambling to avoid a diplomatic embarrassment after the White House ruled out a formal press conference to mark Gordon Brown's first formal meeting with Barack Obama.

Officials denied the Prime Minister was being snubbed after it emerged that the new president would not make himself available for the traditional joint appearance before the White House media.

Mr Brown's aides are trying to make the best of what is a distinctly low key visit compared to the family hospitality lavished on Tony Blair by George Bush when they met for the first time.

Gordon Brown would upstage Obama because he actually is kind of brainy and knows something about the world and actually accomplished something.

Considering the comments I’ve seen from a number of Freepers about England lately, exactly how is this a bad thing?

Oh, they expected the new president to be warm and gracious? Well-bred and international? Not a chance, buddy. He doesn’t want friends, he’s the Emperor. Don’t you get it?

Foreign ambassadors have commented that Obama is ‘aloof’ on matters not related to himself.

I think Obama is just afraid to take press questions where he doesn’t get to handpick the questioners in advance.

Stand by for a few Gordo...the real America is on a short intermission...we will be back shortly. Please disregard any embarrassment this causes in the interim.

or rather his rear end from a hole in the ground. None of this should be surprising since 0bama isn’t qualified to be pres. That was obvious though during the campaign and most everyone preferred to ignore the facts. We have the representation we deserve.

Like what? F*ing up our economy and making nearly 3 million of us unemployed?

Anyway, this just vindicates what I’ve said all along. All those idiots on my side of the pond (including some so-called ‘conservatives’) who rooted for Obama to win on the basis that he was more of an anglophile than John McCain (Ha!) who would reinvigorate the ‘special relationship’ should be tucking in to a hearty slice of humble pie right now....
