Ethnic minorities could receive extra help during the recession following Government fears they will be hardest hit as the economy deteriorates.
Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell announced a controversial drive to ensure ethnic minority workers are not 'left behind'.
He warned that employment levels amongst ethnic minorities fell by ten percentage points in the 1990s recession, more than other groups.
Mr Purnell, announcing the initiative in a speech to Labour's Black Asian and Minority Ethnic annual general meeting in Leicester, said it was vital to ensure the mistakes of previous recessions were not repeated.
'In the past too many were left behind in bad times. Ethnic minority workers suffered most in the Tory recessions,' he said.
'Employment levels amongst ethnic minority workers fell by 10 percentage points in the 1990s recession - much worse than rest of the country.
'Just think of the waste of human potential. Whole communities were abandoned, families where no one then worked for generations.'
But the Government's focus on minorities drew criticism from Conservative MPs, who warned it risked entrenching division.

Coming soon to your neighborhood. Slavery and Reconquista Reparations under another name. It will likely be couched under the familiar banner of "we can't allow another minority Holocaust!" or something similar where anyone who dares object is instantly a 'racist' by definition. Dissent will be forcibly silenced by the usual terroristic methods as we are guilt-tripped into turning The United States of America into a third-world Socialist hellhole.
I'm guessing that this is not what our wonderful Veterans understood that they were fighting and dying for.

Ethnic minority workers suffered most in the Tory recessions,' he said. (Tory = conservative ). I wonder if recessions in the UK ever even happen under a Labour govt.

I wonder if recessions in the UK ever even happen under a Labour govt. Undoubtedly, everything will be blamed on the Evil Conservatives, just as is done over here.
The Left operates in very similar ways in Great Britain as they do here in the USA; they may just be slightly more honest about who they really are and what they are wanting to accomplish in the UK.

Apparently some citizens are more equal than others based on extra melanin or gender.

Apparently some citizens are more equal than others based on extra melanin or gender. It's awfully nice to win the Lottery without even having to go out and buy a ticket, isn't it?

How is this any different from race based discrimination? Now don’t call me “racist”, I’m not white I’m Indian.

I left Bradford convinced that the Gallagher children are better for having lived where they do. Only a racist could say this about culturally isolated white kids.
Britain is going down the drain. The only question is when will the toilet stop flushing.

Labour, like left-wingers the world over, are vicious race-baiters at the core. They will cheerfully break society down into interest groups for political profit.
We’re not standing for it. Affirmative Action is blatantly wicked and discriminatory - as bigoted as the Jim Crow laws..
You wouldn’t put a water fountain up marked “For Whites Only” - but Labour are happy to put a paying job up marked “For Black/Ethnic Minority Only” - and then expect you to praise them for doing it.
The Left are race-thugs. Stop voting for these bigots.

“’Employment levels amongst ethnic minority workers fell by 10 percentage points in the 1990s recession - much worse than rest of the country.”
That sounds desperate, but did those employment levels fall because of the ethnicity of the people, or was it that employment levels in certain areas fell which happened to have a lot of minorities in them? Or did they tend to fall in certain areas of the economy that happened to have a lot of ethnic minority workers in them? If that is so (and I suspect it is) they should be targeting their efforts on the areas and the regions rather than the ethnicity of the workers, if they should be doing it at all.
“’Just think of the waste of human potential. Whole communities were abandoned, families where no one then worked for generations.’”
In other words, recessions are bad. Yes we knew that. That doesnt justify awarding certain sections of the populace special protection against them, and certainly not on a racial basis.
“But the Government’s focus on minorities drew criticism from Conservative MPs, who warned it risked entrenching division.”
How can people not see the blindingly obvious truth of this? Are the “leaders” of the ethnic minorities completely stupid, or what?

It isn’t. Positive discrimination is still discrimination. Two wrongs do not make a right.
