California's Jobless Rate Soars to 10.1%
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 28, 2009 | Stu Woo

California's unemployment rate jumped to 10.1% in January, the highest since 1983, as employers in the nation's most-populous state cut 79,000 jobs in the month.

Meanwhile, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday declared a state of emergency to address California's third-straight year of drought, ordering officials to take steps to reduce urban water consumption and to expedite water transfers throughout the state.

The jobless rate, released Friday by the state's Employment Development Department, is up from a revised figure of 8.7% for December 2008. The national rate for January was 7.6%.

There were 3.3% fewer jobs in California than a year earlier. The report said there were 1,863,000 unemployed Californians, up 754,000 from January 2008.

The first half of 2009 will continue "to be pretty ugly," said Howard Roth, the chief economist for the state's finance department. "Hopefully, the second half of the year will be better, and maybe we get some moderate [job] growth in 2010."

The state is threatening to pass the 11% jobless rate of late 1982, the highest since the Great Depression. "All we need is another month like this," Mr. Roth said.

Let's try California's policies on the whole country!

An LA Times story on this is here .

From Craig Wallace in the comment section for the article:

"I was born and lived in California through 1995, In the 60s, 70s and 80s it was a great place to live and prosper. Now that they've run all the manufacturing, defense and aircraft companies out of the state, along with many other industrial companies, there is nothing left but service sector, low paying retail and low paying government jobs to support one of the most crazy spending liberal socialist societies in the US.

I always tell people that California is a good place to be from, meaning I will never go back; the cost of living is too high and the taxes are insane. Only good thing about California now, is the weather in S Cal. This is what happens when liberals are in power to long without some checks and balances. And Arnold, only have one word RINO!"

And the new “cap-and-trade” carbon tax hasn’t even hit CA businesses yet. That will definitely drive out more companies. And that’s why BO wants to saddle every state with these crackpot enviro-nazi laws, so there will be no place to flee to.

Can’t believe that unemployment would be so high.... Afterall, they have all kinds of government regulation of employers in California. They should just change the regulations to demand that employers hire these people and prevent employers from laying them off!

And, of course, the radical liberal solution is RAISE TAXATION and INCREASE REGULATIONS. That will certainly help the economy, encourage businesses to set up in the state, and create more jobs.....

"Hopefully, the second half of the year will be better..."

Ah the old "second-half recovery" happy-talk. He must not have read his boss's memo that there could be 90K jobs lost just in the agricultural areas this summer due to low rainfall and poor crop conditions.

Yup. Over the past few years France's unemployment was about 9%. Germany's unemployment rose to 12% at one point.

If we are going to "be more like France" then can we please build some nuclear power plants?

The corrupt, evil democrat party is systematically crushing the life out of California.

Unemployment will be 15% in the Peoples Republic before year end.

Illegals are costing California a couple of billion dollars per year.

i think the obvious solution is another tax increase. Heck take 80% of everybody’s money. That’ll straighten things right out. Tax increases solve everything. It must be true, the leftists tell us so.

The same will happen in the rest of the U.S. as Obama destroys capitalism through HIGH TAXES and the “global wamrin farce” - “green socialism”.

Unemployment problem in California?? You mean that they haven’t passed a law making it illegal to fire employees yet???

For RATS, seems like something they would already have done, then declared the problem solved. I mean, isn’t that the next step afer unionization?

It makes me mad beyond belief. I heard while driving that a stupid bunch of petty pencil necks in the bureaucracy voted to ban offshore drilling. A state as magnificent and gifted with enormous resources is being flushed down the toilet. The jerks mindlessly keep voting in the same dim bulbs year after year. Hey idiots of CA, stupidity is expecting a different result while doing the same thing over & over again. It was said by someone who has more I.Q. than all of you combined.
