Hysteria fuels sales of guns and ammo
Sun Sentinel ^ | 2/23/09 | Editors

It is time for many South Floridians to get a grip. Not on their weapons, but on their senses.

First, there was the big run on guns, both locally and nationally, when it was feared the Obama administration would quickly enact tougher gun legislation that would make it difficult to own guns.

Didn't happen. And doesn't figure to happen, particularly since the Supreme Court has reinforced the right of an individual to bear arms.

But that hasn't deterred some South Floridians, who are storming gun shops for ammunition - particularly rounds for military-style assault weapons.

How do FR gun enthusiasts feel about the Springfield XD 9mm 4”?

It's an excellent pistol. Mine never hiccups, never fails, shoots where I aim it and has a decent trigger. Put night sights on it and you just can't go wrong.

That was my plan. Thanks very much for the feedback.

If you have the patience to teach, I have a few more questions:

Do night sights and lasers conflict? Is it wise to have both? How do you feel about attached versus detached flash lights? Is it usual to use a flashlight in a night-intruder scenario, or just turn on the house lights as you go?

I live in a semi-rural area of Southern Oregon. We’re Jewish and an obvious easily identified target for the random Jihadi. My wife’s office in Seattle was shot up by one such wacko, who killed one and wounded several of her co-workers. My local Chabad rabbi knew the Mumbai rabbi. So, we’re sensitized.

Any further thoughts or resources on the topic would be appreciated. Right now I just have some standard hunting arms that are not exactly right for the job, and my level of training and knowledge is low.

That would be fun! When are we going to have our Freeper ‘summit’ too? Just thought I would use the new term ‘summit’ since Obama and the media keep talking summits...lol Obama is having a ‘summit’ on everything...but so far no detailed plans on ANYTHING!!

And the market keeps going down...down..down.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I'll give you my (free) opinion...

Do night sights and lasers conflict?

I don't think so. I have both on the XD and I use it as my "nightstand" weapon. There may be situations where you might want to utilize one or the other. For example, a laser can highlight your position when you don't it done, but the night sites do not as they are passive.

How do you feel about attached versus detached flash lights?

There is a case to be made for both ways. Personally, I would rather not have a flashlight attached. I don't necessarily always want to aim the pistol where I aim the light. Also, a detached light gives you the option of keeping the light away from your body so you don't become as handy a target. I use a very powerful, compact flashlight which has around 140 lumens I bought 2 for $26 at Sam's Club. It has enough power to temporarily dazzle anybody who gets it in their eyes.

Is it usual to use a flashlight in a night-intruder scenario, or just turn on the house lights as you go?

If I'm sure an intruder is there, I am not going after him. We will hunker down and call 911. As far as the lights go, that's your call.

Yikes! I see why you're concerned. I would also consider concealed carry.

Join a local gun club if you can. You will find a lot of knowledgeable people there.

Also, there are a few good Internet forums you can join for free to keep abreast of these issues. They discuss a lot of employment scenarios and there are a lot of knowledgeable people who are a wealth of knowledge who trade advice. Many of them are military/ex-military, law enforcement, and highly trained instructors.

Good luck!

Every libtard ediorial like this just sells more guns and ammo.

Yep. They say: "You don't need to buy this stuff!", but my MSM/BS filter translates it as "Buy more NOW!"

How about regional or chapter contests? Or postal matches between chapters? That sounds more like what we should be doing right now, anyway. Networking and such.

One more point about home defense.

A good home defense weapon is a shotgun. Use #4 buckshot, which is the best self-defense load. Get a 12 gage or 20 gage and teach your wife to shoot it as well (she might prefer the 20 gage, as it has less kick).

A good, inexpensive pump shotgun is made by Mossberg. Check with your local gun store or pick one up in WalMart. Your gun store will have more models, including the high capacity one with the shorter barrel.

Remington and Winchester also make excellent pump shotguns, but I prefer the Mossberg. It is the choice shotgun of the military. It is also the most inexpensive. You should be able to pick up a new one for under $250.

We could have regional Freeper shoots, and then a national level shoot and partay with Jim Rob as the Guest of Honor, and invite Sarah and Anne to shoot a few rounds!

Wouldn't that get tongues wagging?

And it would form the basis for an anti-Acorn Network that we will need before this is over.

Maybe we could see what the BANG LIST guys think?

Stop the train!

Freepers could plan their vacations for the national one, which could be in a central red state.

And the NRA could also have a presence , as it would undoubtedly wish to do.

We also could commission a play called Bitter , Guns and Bibles and put that on as well.

Has anyone else noticed that a lot of the ammo (already packed in cans for burying) is coming in from Russia? The irony is delicious.

I don’t know if it’s still true in Russia, but they use to say the Russians would bury their guns and ammo, then plant flowers over them so they can find them. The joke was the Russians would oil their flowers every day to keep the munitions from rusting.

You guys may want to consider partnering with the Appleseed Project If y'all are serious about doing this, I can put you all in contact with the heads there and we can work something out.
