TAMPA - After President Barack Obama won the election, people flooded gun stores because of speculation that he may limit gun ownership or raise taxes on them. Even though neither has happened, the amount of people wanting to get their hands on a gun hasn't gone down. Scott Patrick is the General Manager of the Shoot Straight gun range in Tampa. He says the number of people coming into his store is still going up. "For whatever reason, whether it's the economy or crime, people don't feel safe," he said. Patrick is having serious trouble keeping all kinds of fire arms in stock, even holsters are often backordered. However, he says ammunition is what is really flying off store shelves. Ammo that sells for personal protection is as good as gold these days, and it's costing 30 to 40 percent more than it used to.

With pistol and rifle ammo getting so scarce/expensive, I've recently told my family that we are going to have to scale back a bit at the range by going back to the .22 rifles.
Snyde and angry comments are just another example of what we see at extremes.
We are close to a creschendo in our perceived need to hoard supplies for an uncertain threat.
It is indeed a good time to be a seller of panic goods.
HR45 would make bartering of ammo FWIW. Not that anyone would (or should) comply with an illegal law.
I’m getting ready. It is just my wife and I though I’ll bring my young daughter home from college. I’m teaching my wife to shoot. Brought her a little .22 Savage. She is now hitting the target. She is such a little thing that I fear a large caliber gun might hurt her. If she steps up to a .308 I will get her a recoil pad. Anybody know a good brand of pad?
China may no be buying our treasuries like they have in the past. Your asssumptions are naive at best.”
IIRC, the last offer of Treasuries on the last Friday of January brought very little interest—from anywhere in the world.
I have also noticed that the nightly news programs are NOT telling us the movement of the Dow EVERY day like they used to.
Charlie Gibson tells us when the Dow goes up—but never a peep when it tanks.
Is this directed to me ?
You mean like when you assumed me to be a criminal intent on robbing for food?
Went to the local Wallyworld here the other day, the guy said they've been out of 9mm JHP and 12ga. 00 for two weeks now.
Says they can't keep it on the shelf and having a hard time getting more.
Just reporting what I'm seeing here.
Assuming you can legally purchase the type of ammo you want in 8 years, where is the probability that the price, adjusted for inflation, will be less than it is today.
Look at it this way; real estate sucks, the stock market doesn’t seem to be near the bottom and we don’t know what industries much less what companies are going to survive the recession, debt instruments and cash are nowhere near keeping up with inflation. Ammo and gold may be the two best investments going at the moment.
AP,
Remember that truck driver who got caught in the middle of that LA riot? He was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Given your comment that there only will be shooting in the large cities, how many truck drivers do you think will be willing to deliver food into those free fire zones?
IF any shooting does start, I agree it will begin there. Secondary and tertiary impacts would be people leaving the larger cities and seeking safe harbor with a relative living in the boonies.
My two cents,
MFO
I foresee a day when a roll of toilet paper, a bar of soap or a box of ammo will go a long way in the barter world.
Our Walmart had a new supply of both 9mm and .45.....will be curious to see how long it lasts.
Curious though, they were sold out of all .22
“Wait until someone thinks that your large dog is food for his family!!!”
My neighbor has a little Chihuahua. I’m trying to get him to answer to “Squab.”
Uggghhh, I mis read you post, damn, I hate when I do that :)
Osama can kill off the milsurp supply with the stroke of a pen. I know many of us are stocking up for that reason alone.
If that happens, the supply of domestic will dry-up in hours and the price will hit the stratosphere.
Oh, come on!
So the ‘have-nots’ are going to mount a Bolshevist revolution against the ‘haves’. I can see them already marching down the streets with their pitchforks and shovels.
I know minorities, women, guilt ridden libs and college students elected BO...but who seriously thinks that bunch could stand up to right thinking militiamen for more than five minutes?
That contest would be over before it started with 150 million small arms already in private possession, right to carry laws in 30-40 states, etc.
This is all a bunch of chicken little BS! Just like Y2K...
We are already the best armed populace the world has ever known without this fear mongering.
“You need, at most, one gun and a couple boxes of ammo per capable household member.”
Please tell me you are joking. A typical box of shotgun ammo holds five — that’s right, FIVE! — cartridges. A typical box of centerfire rifle ammo holds twenty. You can burn up two boxes of shotgun ammo in no time, literally. And, how long do you think 40 rounds of centerfire rifle ammo will last if you need to hunt for food and keep the two- and four-legged predators at bay? Not to mention a SHTF scenario?
Heck, large parts of this country are riots waiting to happen. Detroit has finally gotten "Devil's Night" under control, but I talked to a Detroit FF back in the 80s, and he said on Halloween if your house was on fire you got one engine to respond (normal response would be three engines, a ladder and a chief). If your car caught on fire, you were SOL. Nobody was coming. What happens after an NFL, NBA, or MLB championship?
What happened after Katrina? My neighborhood has always been safe, but big cities? There could be serious problems, and we currently have an administration that will not send troops to protect us.
