Ammo flying off store shelves

TAMPA - After President Barack Obama won the election, people flooded gun stores because of speculation that he may limit gun ownership or raise taxes on them. Even though neither has happened, the amount of people wanting to get their hands on a gun hasn't gone down. Scott Patrick is the General Manager of the Shoot Straight gun range in Tampa. He says the number of people coming into his store is still going up. "For whatever reason, whether it's the economy or crime, people don't feel safe," he said. Patrick is having serious trouble keeping all kinds of fire arms in stock, even holsters are often backordered. However, he says ammunition is what is really flying off store shelves. Ammo that sells for personal protection is as good as gold these days, and it's costing 30 to 40 percent more than it used to.

Well, either you are hoarding ammo because you believe you will have to face an entrenched enemy or you plan to practice more than usual and expect shortages.

My guess is that the supply will continue as long as this buying surge lasts.

There are a number of posters here who are unable to follow a train of thought which does not speak well for our gun culture.

“The Treasury will not allow runaway inflation as they must protect their bond portfolio in order to keep China buying.”

In case you didn’t see the article on Friday, 20 Million have recently been unemployed in China along with the closing of 70,000 factories there.

China may no be buying our treasuries like they have in the past. Your asssumptions are naive at best.

Bingo. Because if we have social collapse you had better be able to protect what you have, meager as it may be.

Your wonderful neighbors will become wolves if they are hungry.

Maybe they will all eat from the bowl of Gubmint gruel that Obama puts out for them and leave you alone, then again..maybe not.

I’d rather be prepared.

This is chicken little panic buying just like Y2K.

Who do these buyer’s think they are going to be shooting?

You need, at most, one gun and a couple boxes of ammo per capable household member.

In seven months there will be an ocean of these panic goods at substantial discounts as people try to raise money to buy food and utilities.”

Disagree completely:

Buy a balance of extra food along with the guns and ammo.

There will be rioting in the streets.

Wait until someone thinks that your large dog is food for his family!!! I am more than a little concerned about my horses, frankly.

There was an election of the haves VS the have-nots in November.

Now the have-nots are going to go after what the rest of us have, especially when the grocery stores have empty shelves.

Farmers in Kalifornia are being threatened with NO WATER at all this coming year- have to ‘protect all the little fish in the Delta” doncha know? BTW- Those fish are NOT a food source for humans. Also have to protect all the swimming pools that everyone has in Kalifornia!!! There are over 88,000 farms and ranches in Kalifornia. Where do you think YOUR food comes from? Want more of it to come from Mexico and have another E-Coli scare that was traced to peppers from Mexico——after bankrupting tomatoe growers nationwide who got the PREMATURE blame for the E-Coli? How much of the food you see on your grocery shelves comes from elsewhere? You want to dry up a farmer? You are NUTS!!!!!!

Truckers who haul product to Kalifornia MUST retrofit their trucks by 1-1-2010 with VERY expensive ‘diesel scrubbers’. Owner-operators cannot afford to do this, and some largbe trucking companies have already stated they probably will NOT haul into Kalifornia any more after 1-1-2010.

More guns and more ammo—and more food stocks.

Personally, I would rather have my dollars in ammo than in our currency, for obvious reasons.

If you believe this is a porrt reflection on our gun culture, perhaps you belong on DU and not FR.

The only rifle in there that was not a shotgun was a 22. I bought it.

LOL! Hopefully it fills a hole in your defensive repertoire. If not, and this is your first, buying guns is like eating Lays potato chips. :-)

Any shooting will be in the large cities. While not impossible I doubt there will be a mass exodus of the urban centers.

‘when do we start shooting?’

I don't know the if and when and I think there's a good chance we're getting close, but I'll be damned if I'm not going to be prepared. Though I do need to stock up some water

“You need, at most, one gun and a couple boxes of ammo per capable household member.”

all depends on what the threat is.

If the threat is a couple of intruders, then one does not even need a couple of boxes - just what is in the clip will generally do the job. How many home invasions have you heard about where the homeownew had to reload?

However, if you are concerned about an extended period of civil unrest? One gun and a couple of boxes will not get the job done.

At this point, I don’t have near enough ammo on hand and am in accumulation mode. I go to the range regularly, so I can also make use of it one way or the other.

And most likely anything else you wish to barter for.”

Bartering groups are already being organized in my area.

I have done very informal bartering with neighbors and others for years-—very informal. “Help me with my fences- I’ll help you weed your property and feed your dogs when you are out of town. Nothing big.

But I wwas shown a brochure from a very organized bartering group last week. They were NOT kidding. Most of the participants are over 50, and have been good citizens all of their lives.

They see real trouble coming.

So do I.

The supply chain seems to be filling up again. Most web sites seem to have 5.56 and 7.62x39 in stock and it seems like major vendors are starting to restock. It looks like the unseasonable ammo surge after the election just caught retail merchants and maybe manufacturers and and importers flatfooted.

I plan to add another fat fifty can to my stock next weekend at the Cow Palace gun show.

The modern carbine back-order issue is still a bother though. I’ve seen on forums that there is still a 3 month backlog for modern rifles just about everywhere.

BLOAT!

I was out at the range yesterday and went through 100 .45 and many 9mm.

If you think one or two boxes is all that is needed, you obviously are not a shooter.”

AMEN !!!

“Bought about $500 of ammo in the past 3 weeks.”

I used to buy that every week before the prices went insane. Now it is ridiculous. I am the neighborhood warlord.

Obama hasn’t gotten around to gun control yet.

Actually, we don't know. The stimulus package was passed while it was being written. This means Nancy, Barak, and Barney knew it was passed and could put anything in it that they wanted. Net neutrality, the fairness doctrine, and gun control could easily have been tacked on after it was passed, and they just haven't revealed it yet.
