In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).
The question of the age of the earth has produced heated discussions on debate boards, classrooms, TV, radio, and in many churches, Christian colleges, and seminaries. The primary sides are:
*Young earth proponents (biblical age of the earth and universe of about 6,000 years)1
*Old earth proponents (secular age of the earth of about 4.5 billion years and a universe about 14 billion years old)2
The difference is immense! Lets give a little history of where these two basic calculations came from and which worldview is more reasonable...

The problem with offering such proof to a Young Earth creationist is that no level of proof is sufficient, because it is an article of faith that any contradiction of the Bible’s literal accuracy is false by definition.’
Although I choose to believe the less than 10,000 yr study doesn’t mean that Bible is inaccurate. The Bible says “one day with the Lord is as a thousand years.”...so I don’t know how long the dinausor age lasted, and when God created man...just that I know Jesus is real because he communes with me daily and that heaven is real. Jesus is a personal savior, and it’s my personal eternity at stake. The rest are just arguments about earthly things, and won’t help anyone with where they spend eternity.
I wasn’t trying to prove my point of when earth was created, because that will always be an argument, but I did provide both sides of the argument although mine was one being criticized...it just shows that scientists do not agree.
If you live at the south pole(even today) it is 8760 hours between sun up and sun up.
Tell me again what a “day” is?
I know you think the “days” of Genesis, chapter one, were 24 hrs. long. Six days and then the 7th. day, God rests or the 7th. is Shabbath.
If all the days were of equal length (and there is nothing in the account to suppose otherwise), then that 7th. day of 24 hrs. should have ended long ago, about 6000 yrs. or so ago.
Has it ended?
If it has, then it most certainly had ended when Moses set the words of Genesis to whatever he used for paper.
Does Genesis say that that 7th. day had an evening and morning like the other 6 days that had ended?
Whats a day?
Uhm, 24 hours. Even in the Chinese calendar, imagine that! (You’re welcome.)
...
Not according to St Paul, who said that 1,000 years are a day in Your eyes.
Just like global warming "science"...
Doesn’t it depend all on your point of view, a la relativity? Time is variable. QED
It was previously stated that God put the time reference (day) in a time frame we would understand. Does that mean that God works in our time frame (On the first day ... )? Why did God need to rest? Since He is writing so we would understand, He must be saying to us that he was pooped out by His undertaking?
==Actually, Creation “Scientist” start with the assumption that the earth is 6,000 years old and then distort their writings to come to that conclusion.
Let me turn that around on you:
Long-age Evo “scientists” start with the assumption that the Earth is billions of years old and then distort their writings to come to that conclusion.
==They REQUIRE their ‘scientists’ to sign an oath that all research will support that the earth is 6,000 years old!
That’s to make sure they are who they say they are. Tell me ColdWater, what would happen to an Evo scientist if they started questioning natural selection or Evo assumptions about the age of the Earth?
The question is, which starting assumption is best supported by the available evidence? To my mind, after reading more books, scientific papers and articles on the subject than I care to remember, YEC is by far the better explanation re: origins.
Right. It better matches what you were told as a kid in Sunday School.
Where did Moses live? And besides, even if you use the south pole, you are still left with a young earth.
Noted that it was you that pointed out the similarities between YEC and global warming research.
==Right. It better matches what you were told as a kid in Sunday School.
That too.
Man measures things in time. God does not. With God there is no “time”. It is hard for us here in our mortal bodies to understand that concept, but it is a reality. God created “days” for man. He has no conscript. What was a day in the bible could be a billion years. We just don’t know. We can’t know. We “think” we know, but we don’t. It is that simple.
I don't understand what y'all are discussing. The earth is fixed and doesn't move.
Yes. But not in the way you seem to be implying. As Dr. Humphreys has brilliantly pointed out, if we assume the Universe has a center of mass (that is, a center and an edge), and if our galaxy is at or near that center, the garvitational time dilation (as per Einstein’s GR) means that the Earth can be thousands of years old, and distant galaxies billions of years old, and yet both owe their existence to the same creation events as recounted in Genesis.
==I don’t understand what y’all are discussing. The earth is fixed and doesn’t move.
Typical Darwinist.
People using Carbon 14 dating do make mistakes...see thread from FR:

Scientists do not all agree on the age of the earth, and that should raise some red flags...so I choose the less than 10,000 yrs old as my belief.
I saw the Shroud of Turin when it was in Atlanta...1979 I believe.
Just because someone is at rest does not necessarily mean they are “pooped out.”
That too.
It is sad when one's learning stops at the age of seven.
