A Dobson High School Advanced Placement government class with strong opinions about Barack Obama watched the president's speech Wednesday on a small, grainy TV in the corner of their classroom.
Some of the students attentively watched the speech, giving questioning looks and comments, shaking their heads and laughing at some of Obama's words. Other students listened, occasion ally glancing up to watch, while texting on their cell phones, reading a book or finishing school work.
The gymnasium's events were shown simultaneously in rooms throughout the Mesa school, and teachers were given discretion on whether to show the speech, the students said. The students in the class were hopeful things will work out but questioned whether Obama's plan would actually work to dig the country out of its economic woes. They also expected a longer speech.
Senior Syna Daudfar took some notes during the speech and was among the most vocally opposed to Obama's words.
At one point, when he talked about the costs of his stimulus plan, senior Maaike Albach and Daudfar looked at each other and said, "uh-oh."
"Overall I think it's a good idea, but he's not addressing the issues of the economic crisis," said Daudfar, a John McCain supporter who added he leans more toward being a moderate conservative. "The spending bill he just passed is just progressing the Democratic agenda rather than addressing the economic issues in the country."
Daudfar thinks Obama's plan is backward and deals with the "less important stuff" first. "Bailing out businesses" and "providing better regulatory systems for giving out money to businesses" should have been first, he said.

Our 13 year old son has seen through this poseur from early on. Our 15 year old is quieter about it, but he’s not drinking the Kool-aid either. Kids aren’t all stupid, and they know it’s a competitive tough world out there.
You'll find that your degree from the University of Life will make getting your bachelor's a breeze.
My mother's master's degree was interrupted in 1951 by marriage and children, but she went back and finally finished it . . . in 1980! She became an associate professor and had a wonderful time teaching.
And my mother in law married at 16 or 17 so she never went to college -- went back and got a degree in fashion design from one of the schools in VA - VCU I think. She was the star of the class and graduated with high honors.
Were they arrested and put into chains yet?
Jews might.
Well, well kids just say the darndest things! (LOL)
There was a new school in our district here in Utah that had been started before 9-11 that got named “Liberty” after the 9-11 attack! I don’t know if that was going to be it’s name before, but it certainly got that name when it was finished!
An amoeba is smarter than our Pres__ent
Thanks for the encouragement and it’s wonderful to hear that your mom and MIL have done so welland enjoyed the experience! I do think I will be going back sooner than later, but there are a few things that are taking precedence over that right now.
The reason I quit suddenly is because my mom was diagnosed with progressive MS. My dad has a very good job, but he traveled 2-3 weeks out of the month. I felt like my place was to be with her and help her since my dad had to work so much out of town and often out of the country. When he started to stay home more, I decided I wanted to join the Air Force Reserves but was held up for my own medical reasons. Then I met my husband...and life progressed.
To make a long story short, I think it’s time that I consider going back and finishing my last 4 semesters.
Oh whoops, that’s not the name! It is called “Freedom Elementary”, silly me! Their school name, or logo is “The Patriots”! It’s in Weber County for UT Freepers or anyone that might want to see it online. Although I imagine there were a number of schools who got named or renamed on that theme, at that time, because of 9-11!
“It’s the advanced placement class. That’s why it’s full of Republicans.”
Exactly. The over-achievers of the future (if they ever get the chance).
Students thinking for themselves IS breaking news in today’s environment, Joyboy.
They havn’t been to college yet.
“Hitler gave great speeches too
That ought to piss off just about the entire state of Oregon.”
I’d replace at least one of the o’s with 0bama’s rainbow “o” logo. Otherwise the DUmmies wouldn’t have a clue as to who you’re referring to.
>>Kid wore shirt: Hitler Gave Great Speeches Too<<
Smart kids,.
There is hope
If you don't want to go back to school full time just yet, look into whether your college offers courses on line. You might well be able to do a good number of credits that way, especially since you have 2 years of in-house already.
But I would try to do at least some of the work on campus. The colleges are anxious for older students because they know you're motivated and will work hard - and set a good example. And you will feel SO smart compared to those young whipper-snappers!
Come to think of it, my dad never finished college either because he got drafted for WWII, he came back in 1946 (couldn't get home any faster because he had no 'points') and fast-talked the dean of the local law school into letting him in without a bachelor's degree. So the law degree is the only one he has (try that these days!!!!!)
The One
Racists!
OMG! You owe me a new keyboard!
wow - so kids are still allowed to think for themselves in Public School? Perhaps there is hope.
The kid with the hitler speach shirt is my hero.
I understand your comment but I wonder... 78% voted for Obama and Jews are VERY smart people. Either I'm missing something big or not.
P.S. Hitler should NEVER be legitimized so I apologize if my comment offended you.
