Bracing Ourselves
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Feb 6, 2009 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 02/08/2009 5:22:46 PM PST by Wpin

All week the word I kept thinking of was "braced." America is braced, like people who are going fast and see a crash ahead. They know huge and historic challenges are here. They're not confident they can or will be met. Our most productive citizens are our most sophisticated, and our most sophisticated have the least faith in the ability of our institutions to face the future and get us through whole. They have the least faith because they work in them.

Tuesday I talked to people who support a Catholic college. I said a great stress is here and coming, and people are going to be reminded of what's important, and the greatest of these will be our faith, it's what is going to hold us together as a country. As for each of us individually, I think it's like the old story told about Muhammad Ali. It was back in the 1960s and Mr. Ali, who was still Cassius Clay, was a rising star of boxing, on his way to being champ. One day he was on a plane, going to a big bout. He was feeling good, laughing with friends. The stewardess walked by before they took off, looked down and saw that his seatbelt was unfastened. She asked him to fasten it. He ignored her. She asked him again, he paid no attention. Now she leaned in and issued an order: Fasten the seatbelt, now. Mr. Clay turned, looked her up and down, and purred, "Superman don't need no seatbelt."

She said, "Superman don't need no airplane. Buckle up." And he did.

We all think we're supermen, and we're not, and you're lucky to have a faith that both grounds you and catches you. Go to http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123388255500354969.html for complete article.

I have not been a fan of Ms. Noonan of late, however something drew me to her column this week. It is one of the most relevant, well written pieces I have read for quite some time. The quiet desperation that so many of us feel is inside her words. Desperation, but courage to face what is coming. I encourage you to read the editorial in total.

Noonan was a leading critic of W, McCain and especially Sarah Palin. If bad is coming, she hurried it along.

From her days as a Reagan speechwriter, Noonan has only been interested in her own marketability. Dramatic sighs while mouthing banal observations is her trademark.

She has gained a lot of weight too.

This sentence has been bothering me all weekend. She seems to imply that the most sophisticated are the cause of the problems. I think this is true. Gesthner ran the New York Federal Reserve Bank, the most powerful of the Federal Reserve Banks. He was at the center of the shenanigans. Apparently so sophisticated the tax code didn't apply to him. Now, he's going to save the system???

I could have written your post. I think Peggy gets drunk with the idea of a charismatic leader who takes the public’s imagination and runs with it. It’s not a particularly conservative idea, except when you consider Reagan, and Peggy’s history with him.

I think reality has settled over her, and she and others are starting to realize they bought into Obama’s BS because of his race—now that they’ve come down, they’re realizing they should have evaluated him on the merits, not on the historical significance of his skin pigmentation.

She states she is inclined to believe that Cheney’s prediction of a large-scale terrorist attack/s is true. And now she questions the Obama administration’s thinking and motives on the recent actions regarding terrorism and terrorist states.

Was she so enamored with Obama’s fake, slick talk that she didn’t see this coming? Did she think that electing Obama would change the world and automatically make us safe. She has proven to be a stupid woman who uses pretty words - kind of like the man she used to admire.

Too late, Peggy, the damage has been done.

Morning after remorse. ;)

Waking up to find that the “one-night stand” has not only left her without even so much as a kiss good by, but with an empty purse and jewelry box.

There is going to be more of this before too long.

She did her best to trash Sarah Palin. Now her hero is starting to disappoint her. She has no party, no beliefs. Just more empty words.

I beg to differ, knowing the nose she's looling down.

Ms. Noonan apparently is a highly suggestible woman. The spell is beginning to wear off for her now. Well, well.

Now that she’s losing her Bam goggles, should we expect a less insular, less snotty evaluation of Sarah Palin?

I won’t have any use for her until she does so.

It would have been more admirable for Ms. Noonan to be a clear thinker and incisive observer during the entire process. She is way too old to be granted the indulgence we might give to a sixteen year old in their first romance.

Furthermore, she is one who will say one thing in public and another in private. In other words, she is a liar.

And that is why Peggy Noonan is a Vichy Republican, the charisma of Obama allowed her the excuse to jettison Sarah Palin and to much lesser extent Mad Jon McCain, now the bed is mussed, the clothes are all over the place, and the Vichy now have to look in the mirror with the bloodshot and hungover eyes.

She crashed the car of her reputation, now there is not much left, just the McLaughhable Group on Sundays..

Brooks is next.
