In his latest labor-friendly move, President Obama signed an executive order this afternoon encouraging the use of union workers for big federal construction projects.
The order instructs federal agencies to have construction contractors make agreements that require contractors to negotiate with unions, recognize union wages and benefits, and follow collective bargaining agreements.
Obama's order restores a Clinton administration rule that was rescinded by President George W. Bush, the Associated Press reports.
In response, Stephen Sandherr, chief executive officer of the Associated General Contractors of America, issued a statement:
"Today's executive order has the unfortunate potential to limit contractors' ability to compete for projects at a time when the government is reporting that over one million construction workers have lost their jobs. Given that federal agencies have no demonstrated expertise in writing contracts that cover contractors and their employees, we strongly encourage officials to exercise the discretion this order provides and avoid government-mandated labor agreements," he said.
The full text of the order is below:
EXECUTIVE ORDER - - - - - - - USE OF PROJECT LABOR AGREEMENTS FOR FEDERAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the Federal Property and Administrative Services Act, 40 U.S.C. 101 et seq., and in order to promote the efficient administration and completion of Federal construction projects, it is hereby ordered that:

Going on right now in Lodi CA. Have been trying to get approval for building a SuperCenter for over 5 years. The concerned citizens group (Union front) keep finding environmental reasons not to build it, even though it is right across from the old style one. Nothing but Union stuff. The other supermarkets are so worried that they will go out of business. I do not love shopping at Walmart, but I believe that they have a right to exist. If you can't compete with them, then figure out what you are doing wrong. Don't blame Walmart for your failures.
LOL....just in time to dump 800 billion taxpayer bucks down the union HOLE....
Socialism we have arrived.... Unions controlling the workers funded by the government.... Damn thats an ingenious way to gurantee votes in the next elections...
I mean whats next??? All he has to do now is shut down his political opposition ...oh thats right he is doing that now.... uh, eh oh....
Constitutional ammendment to lift the term limits of the President..... There that ought to do it.... All hail Obama...
Afraid this is just what many in this forum wanted. They said just let him get elected and then the country will go conservative. Well I held my nose and voted for McCain to try and prevent this.
It's not about wages. It's about who can and cannot bid on Federally funded construction projects. No open shops will be allowed to bid. Only union shops will be allowed to bid. It reduces competition and provides an unfair advantage to union shops in those states that have Right-to-Work laws.
This is very big. It will give the unions a spring board to freeze out open shops in Right-to-Work states where the unions have all but withered away due to their non-competitive practices. With the trillion dollar federal spending package on it's way, this will ensure that only union shops get the "stimulus" and all open shops get nothing.
Not if they belong to the new Obama enabled Brotherhood of Alien Reconquista Forces union.
BARF.
One reason is to force small family businesses out of the workforce.
The prevailing wage law is bad enough, it's cost us a lot of wasted money.
Most government jobs of course have a lot of graft and payoff in them, so honest struggling small business are out of the loop.
I would not be so bad if the Democrats would just come out and say we are Socialist and proud. But instead they do this back room crap. At some point there is going to be hell to pay for this kind of distasteful executive orders.
One thing the Pelosi and her kind in the government should keep in mind is the following:
Texas is a free and independent State ... All political power is inherent in the people ... they have at all times the inalienable right to alter their government in such manner as they might think proper.
make unions bigger but remember one of his staff said no contracts for those white construction companies.
now imagine if a republican said no contracts for the black workers
that big dig was a complete waste of money and the unions up there in Boston was well paid off.
disgusting that my southern tax money had to pay for that
I actually think he should be arrested on the grounds he is an enemy of the state
think about it surely he was groomed for years to get in on the inside to ruin us. Ayers knew his violence was never going to win.
Karl Marx said that they could never take over by force and that they have to get people into positions of power and influence, i.e. teachers, professors judges, elected officials etc.
He has the USS Cole mastermind
his first media address is to the muslims
he shuts down Gitmo and orders be nice to terrorists and being them here
He mentions his muslim roots for the first time to muslims
homo’s open in the military(saul alinsky tactics)
the list is endless in his first few days
to me he and his voters are the enemy who do not care for this great country.
If this bill passes this will ensure that we are screwed financially for at least a generation
Hey it worked for the auto makers in Michigan.
Once he legalizes drugs they will be.
First thing they did to get their foot in the doors was to unionize their butchers in the meat departments. It looked like it was gonna happen until Wal Mart simply decided to shut down the meat departments.
Nice slap in the face for the union thugs.
Agree. Walmart is too big. IMO, we need to take antitrust a step further to allow for local & honest market economies.
Not at all. Estimates are that 20+% of such unions are made up of illegals.
You are nuts...those unions guys hate illegals more than GOP conservatives...they would not take any jobs...promise.
