The new Great Communicator ... isn't (Libs getting nervous)
Salon.com ^ | 2/5/09 | Joan Walsh

Obama is the most remarkable Democratic communicator of my lifetime, I think, and even he's not rising to the task, yet. He needs to lay out his priorities, clearly; he needs to simplify his pitch, yet he also needs to add some depth to his and our understanding of how we got here. This economic crisis is not just about bad mortgages and/or the housing bubble bursting, and it won't be solved by reinflating that bubble, the Republicans' latest dumb idea. These problems have been building since at least the 1970s. Here's how Reich laid it out on Salon....

“It reminds me of the many white teenagers who, for some strange reason, adopt the accent, walk and hand gestures of black men in an apparent attempt to look cool.”

#####

Guilty, self-hating white liberals, who for whatever reason, have come to dominate American popular culture over the past 40 years, have long portrayed all things black, as “cool”.

Speech mannerisms, musical styles, religious beliefs, African “culture”, street slang, moral depravity, behaving like a shameless, immature clown in NFL endzones, even poverty itself, have been deemed somehow hip compared to anything and everything about the habitually “uncool” white man.

You explain this simply and plainly, so that an average American can plainly understand it. Why can’t the Republicans do the same when they get the airtime?

OMG...I read that article and then searched FR to see if anyone posted. I am absolutely stunned at the ignorance of this "editor". Talk about living in a vacuum. What's worse...peruse the comments and it will make you think you stepped into a mental ward. What particularly struck me though was the "lies of the Republicans for the last 30 years..". Hello? What lies? They declare Reagan the anti-christ (well, not actually, but they may as well have) and all of capitalism at fault for a so called decline from the pre-Reagan era.

Again...What?

I can see how some cloistered lib "journalist" might think that way, not having a real JOB and all, but from working in a small family run business when Reagan was elected I can say that without a doubt life got better. Unlike journalists and editors, we actually produced products that were needed, and that mattered....go figure.

Now that they have their messiah in the WH and control of congress they can witness from the first row the economy falling apart and their creature comforts slipping away. They will scream and wail that it's our fault, or anyone else's fault but theirs, but happen it will.

Maybe it needs to happen too.

When it all slows down to a rusting halt, reality (i.e. the people, starvation, disease) will drag them, limbs flailing and mandibles gnashing into the sunlight. Only then will the destructive dementia of liberalism be laid bare. Painful? Yes. However, it needs to happen so that they, their ilk, and their ideals can be exiled from America's future permanently. Too bad it's going to take more than a can of RID to shake these parasites off.

They are perpetrating an assisted suicide on America while telling America, the world, and most comically themselves that their stimulus and social policies are a B-12 shot when it's really a lethal injection.

Who is John Galt?

"President Teleprompter" is very appropriate, but I think maybe Prezident Hopeless is more complete?

He could lock himself in the Oval Office ....smoke a joint or sniff a line..."I know, I'll pardon Michael Phelps!! Everyone will love me again. Brilliant!!", said the stoned President.

So, why is Obama’s skreechy, preachy speech pattern so worshiped by the liberal whites? Do they all want to be black? Is there some kind of value added?

There's a name for The One's method of hypnosis. Seen it around here a few times, but uh, forgot what it's called. I must have been in some sort of trance. :-]

Did anyone read this load? My head was about to explode!!

The case for “big government”. Did this tool ever consider that we haven’t had a true free market economy during the last 20 post-Reagan years because we’re saddled with so much dead weight on the entitlement side?

Cut taxes, cut spending—voila, a strong, prosperous and free country once again!

Danae:

That is one of the best posts I’ve ever seen on Free Republic. You really need to put it out there through different channels.

Congratulations! GG

Our standard of living significantly increased during this period, consumption of many items (cell phones tv’s vcrs, 2 automobiles in every home, upscale lifestyles, restaurants, and many other “luxury”items) did not decline, but skyrocketed, and became available to even those with modest means.

I think the key here is that the standard of living increase is mostly an illusion. The costs were/are too heavy. What used to be durable and passed down to the next generation (e.g. furniture) is now mostly garbage and doesn't last but a couple of years. Well, unless one spends a great deal of money investing in quality, when available, meaning less cash (but plenty of credit) for those other things that make life more enjoyable.

Sloppy construction, sloppy morals, situational "ethics", inferior everything, more debt to keep up with the Jones, more cultural rot, fatherless children, wisdom and knowledge inversely proportional to the ability to access truth - there is zero excuse for ignorance and stupidity these days. How come people were smarter when most of the information/history/literature could only be accessed from a library shelf?

I remember life before microwaves, VCRs, remotes, and basic calculators. There were a lot less perverts on the loose and people weren't suing doctors for imperfect babies, and common household items didn't fall apart after one use.

Life's a trade-off, and I like my computer, email and many other things that modern life affords. Yet modern society has traded life itself for convenience and leisure. Standard of living increase, or a society SoL?

Democratic communicator of my lifetime,

I think Bill Clinton is better...and he can actually think on his feet and isn't dependent on a telepromter.

"I would have to wonder if devaluing ever existed."

My very average salary in 1970 was about $9,000/year and it bought more then than an average salary of $40,000 does today. In 1970 that was enough for a couple to live modestly (1 TV, 2 cars and a nice vacation once in a while) in Orange County, California. Try it on $40,000 today. After housing costs are subtracted (what side of the tracks are YOU comfortable with, Dear?) you couldn't even afford the bus! In one generation we went from a labor value of one worker/family=middle class to 2 workers/family=lower middle class.

Yes, everything is bigger nowadays and the Joneses are still trying to stay ahead of the crowd. We have many hi-tech convieniences and fast food waistlines. But if average salaries are compared for affordability of lifestyle there's no question that labor has been devalued. I contend that the major factor in this devaluation has been the massive influx of women in the labor pool. The Law of Supply and Demand governs wage costs just like it does the cost of canned peas!

WOW! Thank you! I have been researching this for months, and am now doing a college essay on it, I am a student at American Military University in Homeland Security. Happily my Prof gave me permission to go over the 650 word limit LOL.
I can’t thank you enough for your encouragement! I often have strong opinions on things, and I can not in all my 40 years remember a time when I felt more outraged, betrayed, incensed, and utterly dumbfounded all at the same time. This “Crisis” is a Manufactured one, a created one. And those who are at the bully pulpits screaming for the fruits of my labor CREATED it, and have the NERVE to beg us to let them continue to screw us. Someone has to call them on it. I can’t be silent about it any longer.
Thank you very much! I find myself re-energized and inspired all over again! You are just the shot in the arm I needed! Thank you!
