Obama puts the heat on Republicans
Los Angeles Times ^ | Feb. 5, 2009 | Peter Nicholas

He says the 'half steps' now urged by the GOP for the stimulus bill are the same ideas that led to the financial crisis.

President Obama abruptly changed tactics Wednesday in his bid to revive the economy, setting aside his bipartisan stance and pointedly blaming Republicans for demanding what he cast as discredited "piecemeal measures."

Obama's comments were a marked departure from the conciliatory tone he has maintained as he courted Republican votes for his stimulus package through compromise. Against the wishes of his own party, Obama crafted a plan that relied heavily on tax cuts rooted in Republican economic doctrine.

But in an unusual opinion piece in today's Washington Post, and in remarks he made at two White House appearances, the president seemed to acknowledge that his approach wasn't working.

The shift in message comes amid signs of trouble for Obama's $800-billion-plus stimulus bill. Not a single Republican voted for the measure last week in the House, and even some moderate Democrats in the Senate have expressed discomfort over the escalating cost.

Moderates from both parties have complained about spending projects, such as smoking-cessation programs, that don't seem geared to giving the economy a jolt

Please spell his name correctly.

It is “Bawney Fwank.”

Thank you very much.

You mean he risked having a terrorist attack while reading books to kids? Wonder what the media would say if that happened.

I just hope Republicans won't cave, and won't vote for the monster bill, for getting a few crumbs.

More than likely they will. If any Rs, in Congress, are calling for deeply slashing corp and individual tax rates I must be missing it, along with any of them stating the truth about President Scatterbrain's true agenda behind this charade he calls a "stimulus" proposal.

And the 'American people' did not 'resoundingly vote for change' in Nov. Those who voted for Obama were like the two in front of me at the polls who could not master the difficult task of shading in an oval beside a candidates name.

That's an incredible lie even for the LA Times.

No, his ACORN pals, along with the government’s abuse of power by demanding that banks and other institutions give home loans to people who didn’t have the means to repay them, caused this mess.

Yes, we want real tax cuts for people who actually pay taxes, not welfare for people who either don’t pay taxes because they don’t have a job or who don’t pay taxes because they’re thieving tax cheats (like most of the Democratic Party, except VP Joe Biden...*snicker*).

He can say that but it isn't true in the least. Well, except for the spending like drunken Democrats. But that's not what they are suggesting now.

Hussein is doing what Axelrod or someone like that is telling him to do. This is going to backfire, too, because these amateurs are not ready for prime time.

Obama is acting like his mentor pastor Wright.
Screaming, yelling soon the threats will come.

Your numbers are falling Mr. Zer0. Time to resign.

Funny, according to the banks, it's got something to do with legions of homeowners defaulting on their loans.

Oh man, lets not go through this again. Of course they'll go along with this.

"Moderates from both parties have complained about spending projects, such as smoking-cessation programs, that don't seem geared to giving the economy a jolt"

Doesn't look like a tax cut to me. It looks more like an government sponsored advertizing blitz to tell people about chewing nicotine gum to stop smoking, and to stuff money in his media pals pockets from ads run ever half hour 24/7

"With it, we will create or save more than 3 million jobs over the next two years"

Hey Obama, why not just give 3 million people 1 million$ each? it would only cost 300 billion that way, saving 500 billion. Then they can make their own jobs, or just spend and be happy.

Two weeks in and he’s already throwing a hissy-fit when he doesn’t get what he wants right away. What an unmitigated disaster.

This is a big fat lie. The truth is Obama doesn’t have the Democrat votes to pass this either. Democrats in the Senate do not want to hang their sorry asses out on this because it won’t work and they know they are finished when it fails and it is owned lock, stock and barrel by the Democrats.

Looks like the reverse is true, i.e., Repubs and Mad-as-Hell Demos are putting the heat on bo big time.

I don’t trust these republican senators; secretly many of them want to ‘go along, to get along’; they never learn that the left will stab them all in the back in the end, anyway. Idiots!

Thune had the right idea: RINOs bail on him and us

Well may I suggest that he goes to work on his own people, and try to get them to swallow their own garbage. Since they have majorities in Congress and in the Senate they don’t need us for squat.

Republicans, hold the line, to here and no further.
