'Baby boomers' hit by sex cancers

Sexual "liberation" may have fuelled cancer rates

The arrival of the "swinging sixties" may have heralded a rise in sexually-transmitted cancers, say researchers.

Rates of anal, vulval and vaginal cancers rose for "baby boomers" born in the decades after the Second World War.

The culprit, said the King's College London study, is the human papillomavirus (HPV), acquired during sex.

Changes in sexual habits may be responsible, the British Journal of Cancer reported.

These results have revealed a snapshot of just how much rates of these cancers have increased in the post war generations Dr David Robinson King's College London

HPV has been implicated in a number of cancers, including cervical, anal, vulval, vaginal and penile.

Some estimates suggest that up to three out of four people will be infected with it at some point in their lives, although the immune system is normally able to destroy it.

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) - I always thought that was a weird name - never really approached accuracy in the details of that disease. The high-risk people never wanted to change their behavior, just find them a “cure.” Behavior-driven diseases certainly lead the way in medical problems for the Boomers and all the young people coming up.

Speaking of AIDS, I remember when Magic Johnson first announced to the public that he had AIDS. He, too, chose an odd verb. I believe he said he had "attained" the disease. Again, that's another word (like "acquired") that typically connotes a positive gain.

It's funny how people spin things with politic diction, isn't it?

Don’t forget hamsters.

I read somewhere that you can get AIDS from a mosquito. If you're having sex with mosquitos you deserve to get cancer! (IMHO)

"Acquired" during sex?

Yeah, but remember that the British are also the ones that "fall" pregnant.

I can’t find the paper, but a researcher ~10 years ago wrote that most human STD’s are mutations of lower animal diseases.

Most all diseases that humans get (that are not from nutritional deficiencies) are from animals. It was the close relationship of humans and domesticated animals in Eurasia that gave those people relative immunity from the diseases they carried to other parts of the world.

What the article neglected to mention was that certain drug use suppresses immune function leading to higher infection rates.

Apparently huge percentage of us will get some form of HPV, but being there are only a few types that give cancer (or warts)...one shouldn’t overly worry. Women, I think, should be the most prudent, since they have a much higher chance to get cancer than men; but they must also consider that almost every other disease is easier for them to get....including HIV.

Behind gay men and ‘h’ users, women are the distant third. So it pays to know whom you’re getting involved with and not treating sex so casually.

You must not have done well in biology class.

There’s a difference between a hamster and a gerbil.

Attained - now that’s rich! I work in health care, and it is interesting how some of the vernacular seems like it was invented way back when for “polite society.”

I can guarantee that I’m not having sex with mosquitos.

But I cannot guarantee that they’re not having sex with me.

Whatever they’re doing makes me itch.

I think it may be God’s judgement on people who are promiscuous. The healthiest (sexual) relationship is a relationship of one man and one woman in marriage- it’s proven. Anyone trying to say otherwise is just fooling themselves.

Yes, we’ve pretty much always had homosexuality, but it’s alway been an abomination unto God and unacceptable.
