'Baby boomers' hit by sex cancers
Sexual "liberation" may have fuelled cancer rates
The arrival of the "swinging sixties" may have heralded a rise in sexually-transmitted cancers, say researchers.
Rates of anal, vulval and vaginal cancers rose for "baby boomers" born in the decades after the Second World War.
The culprit, said the King's College London study, is the human papillomavirus (HPV), acquired during sex.
Changes in sexual habits may be responsible, the British Journal of Cancer reported.
These results have revealed a snapshot of just how much rates of these cancers have increased in the post war generations Dr David Robinson King's College London
HPV has been implicated in a number of cancers, including cervical, anal, vulval, vaginal and penile.
Some estimates suggest that up to three out of four people will be infected with it at some point in their lives, although the immune system is normally able to destroy it.

Plus, when one puts fruit, plastic, car batteries, whatever in areas that weren’t meant to have them there, this can be a result.
you are seeing people getting cancer in their rectum. cancer in their mouth.
heavy price to pay for the “if it feels good, do it” “free love” movement.
They neglected to mention the clear correlation between the use of “the pill” and the skyrocketing increase in breast cancer.
Don’t bother whining about “studies” that contradict this conclusion. Try actually reading the studies and not the pedestrian summaries yourself.
ya think?
Don’t forget hamsters.
"Acquired" during sex?
That's a very odd choice of word for the BBC to use. "Acquire" typically signifies gain in a positive way -- as in, we acquired a fortune.
"Contracted" is a far better word here. Unless the BBC thinks HPV is a good thing...
You also have to take into account the first pills had really high levels of hormones in them. Nowadays less works just as well (if you don’t forget to take ‘em).
Hamsters don’t cause cancer. I’ve been eating them for years. (kidding)
You’re obviously not using them right. /sarc
It is getting to the point that by the time someone gets married, they have already had numerous sexual partners. Therefore they are putting their future wife or husband at a risk for these dangerous diseases.
if people wait til marriage, they dont have to worry about this stuff.
Right!
I can’t find the paper, but a researcher ~10 years ago wrote that most human STD’s are mutations of lower animal diseases.
“A shepherd is never lonely” takes on new meaning.
OTOH, if given the choice between a sheep and Sen. Barbara Mulkowski (D-MD)..........
I see you're new in town.
Very perspicacious!
Watch that Frisco humor.
Time to pay the piper.
This article was not just about gay people.
I rapidly increasing number of women are getting anal cancer related to HPV.
But I think it has more to do with people being more permiscuious now than it does the acts themselves, which have always existed.
We're also seeing more and more cases of weak and underdeveolped immune systems because we've gone overboard "sanitizing" everything, and throwing antibiotics at every sniffle that comes along.
No, I actually use deodorant.
(Thanks!)
