WASHINGTON, Feb 2 (IPS) - CENTCOM commander Gen. David Petraeus, supported by Defence Secretary Robert Gates, tried to convince President Barack Obama that he had to back down from his campaign pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months at an Oval Office meeting Jan. 21.
But Obama informed Gates, Petraeus and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen that he wasn't convinced and that he wanted Gates and the military leaders to come back quickly with a detailed 16-month plan, according to two sources who have talked with participants in the meeting.
Obama's decision to override Petraeus's recommendation has not ended the conflict between the president and senior military officers over troop withdrawal, however. There are indications that Petraeus and his allies in the military and the Pentagon, including Gen. Ray Odierno, now the top commander in Iraq, have already begun to try to pressure Obama to change his withdrawal policy.
A network of senior military officers is also reported to be preparing to support Petraeus and Odierno by mobilising public opinion against Obama's decision.
Petraeus was visibly unhappy when he left the Oval Office, according to one of the sources. A White House staffer present at the meeting was quoted by the source as saying, "Petraeus made the mistake of thinking he was still dealing with George Bush instead of with Barack Obama."
Petraeus, Gates and Odierno had hoped to sell Obama on a plan that they formulated in the final months of the Bush administration that aimed at getting around a key provision of the U.S.-Iraqi withdrawal agreement signed envisioned re-categorising large numbers of combat troops as support troops. That subterfuge was by the United States last November while ostensibly allowing Obama to deliver on his campaign promise...

Excuse me, but don’t ever cross out George Bush’s name when you add the words “a patriot” to a sentence. We’re just shy of three weeks into Obama’s presidency, and the contrast between that sniveling coward and the courageous George W. Bush could NOT be more stark.
I hope he retires in time to become the next VP.
I don't think so. Obama is too arrogant.
I think it is about time for one of these generals to refuse to carry out Obama’s orders until it’s proven Obama meets the full residency requirements to be our Commander In Chief.
LMAO you think presbo cares who dies in this country?Just watch and see.
Yes, if that Commander In Chief is found to not legitimately be President.
If one soldier refused to obey 0bama based on a lack of proof of natural-born citizenship, then a lawsuit would force the original birth certificate issue into the mainstream and 0bama would be toast if he didn’t meet natural-born residency status.
HEY OBAMASH*T, WAKE FUC*ING UP
This nation, and especially our "leadership class" has not been operating under "the rule of law" for quite some time. We are now merely operating under "the color of law"...
I posted sometime during the campaign that Petraeus wouldn't last six months. Resigned or fired, I hold my opinion. O will not get along with the military nor does he want to. Of course, my all knowing wisdom didn't suspect that he would keep Gates. Wait and see and hope for the best.
Yes, that would definitely be a violation of his oath - to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
F'n pack of metro sissies
$100 says there's not a one of 'em would last 15sec toe to toe with the General, or even 30sec with an ol'fella like me !
Shame on ANYONE who voted for this marxist thieving PoS
Yeah. Thanks. I got that much but I am wondering if anyone knows the procedure that the Joint Chiefs would use to remove a sitting president. I believe they would inform him of his crimes, give him a chance to rectify them or else he/she would be arrested and then the VP would become President with the same ultimatum as the prior President to be followed up with the Speaker of the House and so on.
I'm pretty sure that's how it works but is was way back during the Carter years that a 2 star general in our family was explaining it to my parents and I'm a bit foggy on what he was saying.
He's dead now so I can't really ask him but I believe we are headed in a direction where this scenario may well be tried. Hussein Obama is every bit as arrogant and condescending to our military, if not worse, than the Clinton's were IMO.
You nailed that one for sure.
At this point I’d love to see them surround the Whitehouse and Capital and call all of the traitor’s out. Time to line them up against a wall and be done with them! Pateraus could take over until we can have another election shortly after the thinning.
Sure, in places like Chile or Turkey.
For them to do as you suggest would make us no different from any South American dictatorship of the month.
And THAT would be insubordination followed by a long stretch at Leavenworth.
