So they would’ve taken off northwest, and then had to make a left turn to the southwest or south to line up and ditch in the Hudson?

If they can do so safely, they should keep it from sinking - it is now some priceless data on commercial airliner water landings and it would be a shame to have it be even more damaged when it sinks and hits the bottom.

We’re watching a live feed here in the office. Everybody off the plane now and it’s being tugged down the Hudson. Those must have been thosy pesky geese that invaded my mother’s nursing home on the river.

Kinda looks like that tugboat captain may have a line on the plane. He could keep it up for awhile. Would really be cool if he could get it into shallower water, or hold it up til a barge and a crane could get there.

Shep also keeps calling the boats fairy boats. Well, he must think that they're part of his "Navy". :=)

Fox News saying "The pilot did an AMAZING job in landing that plane on the Hudson River..."
Incredible: Look at the passengers on the WINGS of the plane:
Passengers stand on the wings of a U.S. Airways plane as a ferry pulls up to it after it landed in the Hudson River in New York January 15, 2009. (Gary Hershorn/Reuters)

they should run cables under the plane and lift them via helicopter to keep the plane up enough to get the people out. Any chance they could pull the goose carcasses out of the engines, fire 'em up and fly it out of the water?

Aircraft is really sinking now, but the tug appears to have ropes on it...
Yeah, the tug has control of the aircraft via ropes and they'll drag this thing to a dock area.
To: Spktyr
They’ll get it back. I doubt the Hudson is more than 200-300 feet deep there. They should try to navigate it so that it’s not in the shipping lanes.

MSNBC reporting that all are off the plane and safe — awaiting an official headcount.
35 were rescued.

Man, I was just sitting here watching the live feed on my desktop, work/lurk mode, and was thinking how amzing that rescue was. Those boats just swarmed the plane and coordinated the efforts among themselves.
I’m not from anywhere near New York, but I will say those folks up there are awesome!!

"Going through a flock of geese can take out both engines."
You'd think they could put chicken wire or some such, on the front of those engines!!
