Stumping for the presidency, Barack Obama relentlessly assailed what he called the Bush administration’s “dangerous and failed foreign policy.” But with the prospect of taking power just weeks away, imitation is proving to be the sincerest form of censure. Just one month after Obama picked a hawkish national security cabinet, retaining some Bush administration personnel in the process, the president-elect has once again signaled that he intends to follow the outgoing administration’s course in the war on terror.
In a Sunday interview with ABC News, Obama revealed that he was unlikely to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center in the first 100 days of his presidency. That is a stark climb-down from promises Obama made as recently as November, when he indicated that shutting down Guantanamo would be a top priority.
Proximity to power seems to have had a sobering effect on Obama. “It is more difficult than I think a lot of people realize” to close Guantanamo, he explained on Sunday, pointing out, correctly, that its resident detainees are actually “very dangerous.” Obama did not miss the import of that admission, specifically that any closure of the facility would have to be so designed that it “doesn’t result in releasing people who are intent on blowing us up.” Until such a plan exists, Guantanamo will stay open.

It seems that the realities of the daily security briefs and the fact that the Pentagon has recommended that 110 of the Gitmo prisoners should NEVER be released has slapped some sense into him.

I've never had a problem with that idea, so long as they were placed at prisons where there are few if any successful escapes. Preferably a prison down south, like Angola or Holman. These AQ guys at Gitmo would learn how coddled they've been, once they got there.
Prisons are the primary place of recruitment for Islamists. There is a large population of black Muslims in every prison. They would join those groups and further indoctrinate the black Muslims to hate America and possibly establish terrorist cells themselves.

We can think back with pride to decades of hard work toward our strategic goal of a big enough, broad enough and united enough labor and all-people’s movement that could overcome the ultra-right blockage to all progress. That all people’s movement has come to life, it is dynamic and it has the potential to keep growing.
The election of Barack Obama and a strengthened Congress creates new conditions in our country. There is now the possibility to shift gears and move forward. This new day requires us to further develop our tactics in order to continue to deepen and broaden labor and people’s unity.
There are thousands of experiences that we all have had in these momentous days, some large, some small, all of which express the enormity of change in thinking and readiness for involvement that is underway and that steels us for the battles ahead.
The tears of joy we all shared as crowds gathered to watch the election results here and throughout the world dramatize the new moment we are in.

Even the most unbiased of observers may legitimately ask: Why on Earth is an individual who helped negotiate the turnover of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard to the communist Chinese, thereby creating the threat to U.S. national security described in the Washington Times article by Rowan Scarborough and inserted into the Congressional Record by Rep. Solomon, being considered for a top position at one of our nation's most critical intelligence agencies?"

IPS’s [Institute For Policy Studies] Washington, DC headquarters quickly became a resource center for national reporters and a place for KGB agents from the nearby Soviet embassy to convene and strategize. Cora Weiss headed one of the IPS's most successful forays -- into Riverside Church in Manhattan. Hemispheric resistance to the first attempt by the U.S. to force the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) on every nation on this continent led to its eventual defeat at the IV Summit of the Americas, held in Argentina in 2005. The organizers of the April 2009 V Summit of the Americas had hoped to focus on a social agenda of providing a decent living for all those who call the “Americas” their home. The emergence of the PPA, or Bush’s Plan B for the FTAA, represents a threat to the urgent need of having all nations in the hemisphere focus on tackling the disparities that make the region the most unequeal in the world.
According to Obama, “what's good for the people of the Americas is good for the United States.” Among the specific proposals Obama has made (political freedom and democracy; freedom from fear and security; freedom from want and opportunity) in the “New Partnership for the Americas” document, he says that “it’s time for a new alliance of the Americas” that leaves behind “eight years of failed policies” and “top down reforms”, and puts forward instead an “agenda that advances democracy, security, and opportunity from the bottom up”. Ok - I’m confused - I thought he recently said that he was not going to close Gitmo in an interview - then yesterday or something he said that he would be closing it when he got into office shortly there after and now again he is saying that it won’t happen at least not until later? Am I all whacked out or has he been sorta flip flopping on what to do?
Cheney had Obama kidnapped over Christmas vacation and implanted a chip in his brain and reprogrammed him. Oh well.
