Bush cautions GOP to stay open-minded

Down to single digits in his days left in office, President George W. Bush is warning the Republican Party not to become "anti-immigrant" as it regroups from defeat and retools its leadership.

"It's very important for our party not to narrow its focus, not to become so inward looking that we drive people away from a philosophy that is compassionate and decent," the departing president said in an interview broadcast Sunday, nine days before his term ends. "My call for our party is to be open-minded."

I guess. They might as well manufacture new citizens like they print off new money.

This government sucks.

Bush is right.

No he is not.

Being seen as anti-immigrant will cost the Republican Conservatives tens of millions of votes

So does allowing more and more illegal immigrants. It's time to send them back. It's anti-ILLEGAL immigrants... not anti-immigrant. My wife is a first generation LEGAL immigrant. Stop blurring the two.

Being seen as “anti-women’s choice” will cost the Conservatives similarly.

So you are pro-infanticide? Is this what you want to say?

Instead of all you yahoos jumping on the President for his (wise) observation, why don’t you figure out some way to come across as “pro legal immigration” and “pro-life” and Conservative at the same time?

This statement is so idiotic it doesn't deserve an answer.

My original question was to all the FRiends that claim they have no problem with LEGAL immigrants.

If all illegals are made LEGAL, then IMO, they all should STFU.

For to do otherwise, shows a different, unattractive quality about them. Don’t you agree?

I must disagree with your position on Mr. Bush’s departure.

Let the door hit him on the ass.
He destroyed the party and the country on this issue.

So...Donna....what part of President Bush’s statement is wrong?

Unless we embrace our new fellow citizens, we will continue to wander the political desert.

That’s President Bush’s message.

New citizens are a revenue stream for the government and business.

Considering the financial condition of the federal, state and county coffers...well, you understand the dilemma.

The only thing I find ‘unattractive’ is you wanting to destroy our sovereignty. You’re using circular logic. Why not give all criminals freedom from their crimes? Just because you want something ‘legal’ doesn’t make it right.

I want people who wish to come to this country to wait their turn and work through the process. If people who are here illegally then rewarded with blanket legal status, what is the point of ever following laws that are currently on the book?

When are these stupid republicans starting with Bush & McCain going to stop trashing the conservative base. If this election should have taught them anything its that RINO and Lib-Lite DOES NOT WIN!!! If I hear the phrase “anti-immigrant” come out of 1 more RINOs pie-hole I'm going to scream. Don't these people get it it's anti-illegal, anti-under-the-table-jobs and anti-illegal-boarding-house that is the issue, not anti LEGAL immigrant.

If you'd been around on FreeRepublic during the debacle known as the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" debate, you would have seen that the vast majority of conservatives are pro legal immigration.

Washingtonians are destroying this country by willfully evading the proper enforcement of our current immigration laws.

Amnesty to illegals was handed out during the last round of "immigration reform" in 1986. We have not forgotten how Washington went back on their word.

BTW, I'm pro-choice, as long as that choice is life.

Let's stay so open-minded our brains fall out.

Seems to me that Bush and the Republican congresscritters have been doing that for the past 8 years to make nice with the ruthless Democrats.

“Unless we embrace our new fellow citizens, we will continue to wander the political desert.”

They are NOT FELLOW CITIZENS! They are CITIZENS of other countries...many of them enemy countries. What part of that can’t you understand? Are you a citizen of this country? Legally?

“He was forced to appoint”

OK, how was he forced? It was a weird shift from Harriet Miers to Roberts.

Conservatives moaned & complained, but how did that “force” him? I would like to know that.

Bush is right. Being seen as anti-immigrant will cost the Republicans and Conservatives tens of millions of votes and thousands of election defeats in the future.

McCain's support for amnesty was such a great draw to him in 2008 wasn't it?

Being seen as “anti-women’s choice” will cost the Conservatives similarly.

You support killing babies...nuff said.

Instead of all you yahoos jumping on the President for his (wise) observation, why don’t you figure out some way to come across as “pro legal immigration” and “pro-life” and Conservative at the same time?

It's obvious you don't spend much time here because if you did, you would realize that we support LEGAL immigration. What part of illegal do you not understand?

You just wrote...."the reason I deleted my profile is because of posters like yourself."

Exactly right, posters like me kept using your own words to expose your self-described uber liberal attitudes so you had to hide from what you yourself wrote.

Many of us here clearly remember your invective filled (nazi, jack-booted, kkk, are you a moron or do you just play one on Free Republic?) rants directed at anybody who called you on your professed liberalism.

Many of us remember that every time anyone brought up the American victims of crimes committed by illegals your response was always...."YAWN".

No, we remember who you are.

Good to hear. Then you should have nothing to complain about in about six months. ;^)

If they make the existing illegals "legal", then the crime pays and we can expect a lot more of them.

People who have the personal drive and intelligence to follow the laws required to legally (in the present sense of the term) immigrate here are the ones we want to come here. The corner cutters and rule breakers are the ones who will kill our country.

Please understand that I'm not supporting McCain. Hardly.

But the party isn't going to respond to a group which isn't a source of either money or votes.

Our objective should not be to make the party court us. Instead, it should be to actively regain control of the party.

We can best do this by uniting behind and actively supporting conservatives at the state and local level. Winning primaries with them. And, then, general elections.

It will be a tedious process. But it will produce better results more quickly than would a third party.

I hope he is proud giving our money to people that don’t deserve it. The money we worked hard for. But, when has that ever stopped politicians.
