NEW YORK (AP) You're standing in line at a deli behind two day laborers fumbling with cash and struggling with English, when the clerk begins spewing hatred. Go back to your country, he says, or go eat at Taco Bell.
What would you do?
Stand in uncomfortable silence, hoping simply to leave as quickly as possible? Tell the clerk to shut up? Or join in with the bigotry, kicking the men while they're down?
When ABC News set up that scenario in a New Jersey deli, hiring actors to portray the clerk and laborers and hiding cameras to record the reactions of real people, it found all of those responses and more.

I would eat somewhere else.
Screw the illegals — Taco Bell would works just fine. Served by an illegal, of course.
How about have 2 teenaged girls pose as friends going to Planned Parenthood with one girl playing the pregnant one who has a “mistake” and the other friend trying to talk her out of the abortion.
Wonder what the other customers and the owners would say to THOSE plants.
Depends on whether the clerk is Black or a Native American.
How about the media sets up this scenario: millions of illegal immigrants enter the country and work under the table. Low-skilled Americans are squeezed out of the job market and families, neighborhoods and cities go into decline because crime increases, language problems multiply, and honest work is hard to come by.
What would you do??
Well, the answer is apparently "nothing", which doesn't make for good TV, so I guess this falls into Bastiat's "What is unseen [on TV]" category.
That´s pretty bad customer service. Why would you assume they´re here illegally? Maybe they have tourist visas. Maybe they went to schools in D.C.
Now, let´s say my government was allowing millions to illegally enter my country. Would I tell them to “shut up” about absurd amnesty plans? Would I attack them for failing to prosecute and deport illegals? Yes.
Same here. I still refuse to eat at Cracker Barrel and Denny’s for past (and differing) discrimminatory practices.
How real world is this?
If you are a day laborer at a restaurant at lunch, then you didn’t get a job that day (you’d be at the site) and must be UNEMPLOYED, not a day laborer.

I would take the ‘day laborers’ aside and politely help them with their transaction, then tell them they’re breaking the law by being here and I learned spanish before I went to their country, just as they should have. Then I’d tell the clerk he’s an idiot.(if in fact it was hateful, bigoted speech)
I’m not for illegal immigration, but I wouldn’t eat at a place where the clerk was rude to a couple customers. I would turn around and walk out.
This is what's known as a straw man.
ABC carried five "What Would You Do?" hours last winter, and doubled the order for this year after it was the highest-rated newsmagazine among younger viewers."It's the kind of insightful television that makes you think, the water-cooler stuff you talk about the next morning," said John Quinones, who anchors the series
BULLSTALIN.
It is anecdotal evidence at best and stilted agitprop at worst since not every staged encounter is shown and those that are designed to push an agenda will be given attention.
This is "news" these days. Especially by the youth of America.
Agreed. I'm not going to stand in line and listen to a clerk harangue customers.
I would never return to a business that pulled a political stunt on the customers for ABCDisney.
There are groups beginning to do similar operations against PP. Have you seen the video of the girl (posing as a 13-year-old) telling the PPM (Planned Parenthood Murderess) that she was impregnated by a 31-year-old man?
MM (in TX)
What would you expect from some place called
“Cracker” Barrel?
Re: not every staged encounter is shown and those that are designed to push an agenda will be given attention.
You hit the nail on the head.
I’d treat them and everyone else in line to lunch at Taco Bell.
Laugh at the illegals - then call the INS. :-)
