Parody author defends 'Barack the Magic Negro' December 29, 2008 12:35 EST
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The Memphis author of the musical parody "Barack the Magic Negro" says he isn't surprised the song has gotten some people upset.
Author Paul Shanklin describes the song as political satire and says it's supposed to be provocative.
The song, which is sung to the tune of "Puff the Magic Dragon, has drawn attention and criticism since Chip Saltsman -- the former head of the Republican Party in Tennessee -- sent out a CD with the song on it as Christmas presents.
Saltsman managed Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign and is now running for chairman of the Republican National Committee.
The song questions whether Obama is "authentically" black and intimates white voters wouldn't have voted for him if he had been from "the hood."

The only "excuses" for the 2008 losses are:
A) A significant percentage of the electorate that cast their ballot solely on the basis of one particular candidate's skin color. And,
B) A GOP candidate at the top of the ticket who generated no excitement among his own party by reflecting the "Let's go out and appeal to the moderates and liberals" attitude that I see here.
That ain’t magic.
No one ever told him the old saying about not teaching his grandmother to suck eggs.
Being who he is, he couldn’t quite figure it out either...
You are wrong. Palin was on the ticket. She generated plenty of excitement. The fact is there is not enough conservatives to elect a GOP president. We have to appeal to a broader base. As for color, there were some in my area that said straight out they would not vote for a black man so I don’t know about this.
Defending or “saying sorry” will do nothing to enhance the chances of the GOP among people who are ignorant enough to consider the Republican Party as racist because of misrepresentation of facts.
The only way that situation will ever be remedied is for Conservatives to be as bold in stating who we are and what we believe, as the the left is in defining us as something we are not and lying about what we believe. And, we should be condemning those among us who would perpetuate the lies for political expediency as is the case here.
If we condemn ourselves by accepting guilt for the lies told about us and apologize for it, why should anyone else absolve us of guilt?
You do realize that Bepublicans breathing in and out is considered racist. The song was a parody of Democrats’ own words...I have no idea why anyone apologized for it.
Oh. OK, because YOU say so.
Palin was on the ticket. She generated plenty of excitement.
Obviously not enough to un-do the damage done by the candidate at the TOP of the ticket. Evey conservative knew that we were going to get a moderate/liberal administration with McCain. It was plain that after the way the McCain people "handled" Governor Palin at the beginning of their campaign that had they managed to pull out the win, she would have been the proverbial "bucket of warm spit" in his administration.
We have to appeal to a broader base.
"We" tried it. And lost.
Now it is time to appeal to Conservative principals, and the people who believe in them.
We did not try... we have been giving away voters for years.
Are you saying that McCain did not try to appeal to a "broader base" during our recent joke of a campaign?
The republican leadership is no longer conservative, a true conservative wouldn’t go near this crap with a 40 foot pole.
Our weak nominee attempted to live in the middle, tried to please uninterested critics, and got stuck on the fence right where it hurts. It's our move AWAY from Reagan that lost the election...
yelling at them and insulting them will not win their votes
The truth may hurt sometimes, to you that sounds like yelling, only because you disagree.
I prefer to think of it as "we have been purging our party of liberal poison" for years.
If only it were true.
Really? Let's see...until November 2006, Republicans (not necessarily just conservatives) had control of House & Senate, majority of Governors and State Houses. The past 2 years, we have allowed the MSM and the hysterical liberal fringe dominate the agenda and we did not defend our turf...instead the (R) leadership tried to do exactly what you recommend...it's like making a truce with Hamas. A joke, and no win possible.
We have to defeat liberalism with our ideas, be leaders in setting the agenda, and that will attract more young people as they move upward on the economic ladder...just like 28 years ago and 56 years ago and early 1900's, etc.
This is what liberals do. They recycle stories hoping that this time it will create some form of outrage among the general population. They did it with the Bush national guard story, they try it pretty much anytime Ann Coulter releases a book and now they are trying it again with this Magic Negro parody. When the parody first came out they tried to make an issue of it and it didn’t fly now they are trying it again. Amazing.
“Exactly what do you want to do that a RINO wont do? Most are fiscally conservative.”
Sorry, that’s all I could read! ROFLMAO.
I can’t understand exactly how GOP gets elected with only conservative votes...Ronald Reagan had a winning coalition which included RINO’s as we call them today.
I almost stopped breathing myself due to laughter at the "Eat, Caroline" song from the other day.
