Here's a pic from Christmas 1965 aboard ship in Subic Bay, PI.
While working in the Pipe Shop, we made a candy cane out of 3" steel pipe, attached a sign, "Season's Greetings from 56A" and welded it to the deck in our shop.
A few sailors came back aboard the ship after drinkin a few too many "San Magu's", knocked the candy cane down and hauled it up to Officer's Country and left it on a table in the Ward Room.
Some guys just had no sense of humor. We had to go retrieve it and it then went back into the pipe rack. It would later be used to fabricate a section of fuel piping for some tin can in the fleet with the red and white stripes still showing.

Yes, Sand, I’m chasing the FR bug....I was starting to blame my ISP, but now, all of a sudden, my pinger won’t work. It hasn’t worked from work for more than a week. I’m not functioning very well without it. LOL!

Merry Christmas, Dave, and thanks for sharing your Christmas story aboard ship. That is one cool, and giant, candy cane. You sailors did a good job. Would love to have seen/heard the reaction to the stripes when it got to the tin can.

Goodness what a first Christmas away from home yours was. Thanks for your service and WELCOME HOME! (Remember lima beans and ham?)
I was at the USMCAS El Toro for my first ‘away from home’ Christmas (1965).

Great Christmas story Diver Dave.

Oh my gosh Kathy, I understand about things not being where they’re suppose to be...makes one go grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr indeed!
Minus 8 degrees...oh my.
You have a good sleep and hopefully all will fall into place tomorrow.
By the way, our tanker says hi and thanks for everything. Also if you go to that last link I sent (where his tank has a near miss with that IED) and see picture #1 that’s him bent over checking out the tank before it goes out on mission. The cameraman got the wrong name.
OK nite nite and we’ll see you later.
