Some top retired military leaders and some Democrats in Congress are backing William White, chief operating officer of the Intrepid Museum Foundation, to be the next secretary of the Navy - a move that would put the first openly gay person at the top of one of the services.
The secretary's job is a civilian position, so it would not run afoul of the ban on gays serving in the military, but it would renew focus on the "don't ask, don't tell" policy as President-elect Barack Obama prepares to take office.
"He would be phenomenal," said retired Gen. Hugh Shelton, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 to 2001, pointing to Mr. White's extensive background as a fundraiser for veterans' and military causes.
Retired members of the Joint Chiefs have contacted Mr. Obama's transition team to urge them to pick Mr. White, and members of Congress said he would be a good choice for a service secretary.
"He's very capable," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, New York Democrat, whose district includes the Intrepid Museum, a retired aircraft carrier berthed on the Hudson River in New York City.
Mr. Nadler said Mr. White has become a friend of the military, and particularly the service members and their families, both through the Intrepid and through Fisher Houses, which offer a place to stay so families can be close to military members who are receiving medical care.
A spokeswoman for the Obama campaign said they won't comment on personnel decisions.

“Chips, ahoy’! Bwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahhahahahaha!
No offence to the REAL Naval men in our beloved fleet.
Putting him in charge of the Navy is like putting me in charge of a beer factory, or a kid in charge of a candy factory. Bad Idea(tm). REALLY BAD IDEA(tm).

I’m retired Navy, been out 6 years now. Even though I’m sure have changed in that time, I’m sure haven’t changed all that much and this won’t go down well with the majority of sailors.
I voted to stop Obama, I guess you did not. This crap mess is yours. You own it.
Clinton was a much greater threat to our nation than is Obama.
She is still aiming high though. She got her latest appointment for a reason. I do not anticipate that most will perceive that point as I do.
Maybe I just read too much.
Nothing surprises from this point forward.
“Yes sir, he jumped. He jumped right offf the stern sir. We tossed him the bouy but he couldn’t get to it. Why would he jump sir? What a queer way to go.”
I understand your reference and will point out that it was made in re the Royal Navy.
As a 12 year veteran of the U.S. Navy I can assure you that sodomy is not a tradition, nor acceptable in service, regardless of the sex of the participants. It does, however, occur and is punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Tragically I believe the don't ask don't tell days are just about finished and soon gays will serve openly.
I also believe that it will last until recruiters and the individual services find they can't fulfill their quotas, then it may have to change back for national security reasons.
The final outcome of gays in the military rests with how many are willing or not willing to serve with homosexuals.
Only time will tell for sure. However the MSM and Academe, have been systematically defining deviancy down for decades and in the end they will probably win this battle too, only time will tell.
Did you say something twinkie?
What’s with the ring on the married finger?

Apparently it was not even said about the Royal Navy, or at least not by Churchill as alleged.
Probably some left-wing journalist just made up the quotation because it seemed useful......

Not sure if this Salazar guy who was put in charge of something today is gay but it fits in with this whole Village People concept.
Great. Now I have “In the Navy” by the Village People running through my head. Thanks a lot.
Here’s my revenge:
“I’m Popeye the sailor man...”
