I understand your reference and will point out that it was made in re the Royal Navy.
As a 12 year veteran of the U.S. Navy I can assure you that sodomy is not a tradition, nor acceptable in service, regardless of the sex of the participants. It does, however, occur and is punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

And in 1982 when I was in....anyone caught committing sodomy would have gone over board with the trash, I kid you not. That kind of stuff wasn't even joked about.
