SAN FRANCISCO A day-long work stoppage for which people were encouraged to "call in gay" to express support for same-sex marriage drew spotty participation Wednesday, with some gay right activists praising the event and others questioning its value.
People who opted to take the day off from their jobs as part of the national "Day Without a Gay" were encouraged to perform community service, and charitable organizations across the country said they had volunteers showing up.
"Visibility is really important for the gay community, so after a lot of thought I decided I would come out and be visible with my colleagues at work and use the time working for the community," said Carrie Lewis, 36, a University of California health researcher who spent the day working at the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center.
The protest, which a gay couple from West Hollywood organized through the Internet, was designed to demonstrate the economic clout of same-sex marriage supporters following the passage of voter-approved gay marriage bans in California, Arizona and Florida last month.
Participants also were asked to refrain from spending money or at least to patronize gay-friendly businesses for the day.
In San Francisco's gay Castro district, several residents and merchants said they endorsed the cause but did not think a work stoppage or spending boycott was practical, given the poor economy and how quickly the strike was organized.
"My employers have always been there in every possible way. I didn't feel comfortable discomfiting them when they have gone out of their way to be there for me," said Paul Ellis, 51, a manager at Cliff's Variety hardware store.

“All fuzzy hat, no poodles.”
THAT is funny...
Instead of one day, make it 365.
This is the most pampered, privileged, catered-to victim group that has ever existed! They get whatever they want from politicians who are deathly afraid of the wrath of vicious militant feminazis.
The really good news would be knowing how many got fired for such a stupid goal.
Get over it.
Petered out..
My thoughts, exactly.
Those liberals sure showed us, didn't they? First by giving us a day without illegals and now a day without radical gay activists (Gays who care more about doing their job than showcasing their sex life undoubtedly went to work). Can they make this an annual thing? And what special interest group should sit home next? I vote for "Day Without Race Baiters" next. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton should stay home to show how we can't get by without the cult of victimhood.
“Call in Gay?”
I thought they said “Fall in, OK”?
I have been standing at the position of attention for over 2 days now....Man, am I embarrassed.
(MILITARY HUMOR)
All of our people showed up yesterday, even those that normally miss in the middle of the week.
“...were encouraged to perform community service, and charitable organizations...”
Or they could just spend the day forcing large objects up their butts.
It occurs to me that participation by the gay community on this was probably very very high.
And what we see is they don’t actually matter much, because there just isn’t that many of them after all....
Just a thought.
There are not as many gays in the population as the homosexual lobby wants us to think.
I’m in the restaurant industry, and most of the gay guys at our restaurant didn’t even know about it. They were busy trying to make a living.
Anyone with a grain of sense in this economy is going to be worried about losing his job. And their bosses are probably worried about surviving.
That’s all you need, if you’re running a shop or a restaurant and some of your key workers call in gay with no warning. Especially if you’ve been treating them well.

muslims are a very close 2nd.
I know of a few people who, after their vacations, went back to work only to be told “you’re fired”.
