In the social circles of the New York Times editorialists, it's OK to have one kid. Two is pushing the envelope. Three or more is tacky, and a threat to the survival of the planet.
That being so, there's really no reason to let any car bigger than a Prius be built. Doing so just encourages the unenlightened to overbreed. And so it is that in its editorial of today, the Grey-but-barren Lady suggests that as a condition of the Detroit bailout, "Congress could consider demanding that Detroit simply phase out S.U.V.s and vans by a certain date."

Freedom does not mean freedom to spend away the future of this nation which is what you seem to believe.
“Freedom means being ready to fight for our country, not just spend the country away and say “so what?”
Do you really think that is what freedom is? It sound a little fascist to me.
Hitler could say the Germans were free in the ‘30’s because they were ready to fight for their country.
Expand your horizon about freedom. Seriously.
When I say, “I will pay more for American oil right now, today at the pump if possible.”
How does that mean that I am willing to “spend away the future of this nation..”
By the way I do not have an SUV but I think others should be free to own one. Even in NYC. Even if you don’t approve.
Can’t you see that attitudes like yours are so dangerous to others freedoms. Do you care for others freedoms or just yours?
You are comparing the safety of America to Nazi Germany? You say freedom is the choice to spend away the countries future and give money to our enemies — is that what you term freedom?
Do you also think Islamic terrorists should be free to set up terror camps in US territory?
I am comparing your attitudes with Nazi Germany.
Safety? Attitudes like yours are a threat to freedom and safety.
I can’t believe I am reduced to defining freedom to someone on FreeRepublic but I can tell you it is more that just “safety.”
Of course I do. Don’t you? /s off/
Now come off it. Allowing others to drive what they want is like allowing Islamic teror camps in US?
Not even going to answer that one. Try again.
Will you please list below what additional freedoms you will restrict so that we can be ‘safe’.
I’ve been following your “discussion”.
Cronos’ thinking is as f’d up as a pile of hangers, as you’ve pointed out.
No one has the right to tell someone else, much less legislate, what kind of vehicle they drive or how many resources they consume, or tell them that they “don’t need” something, as long as the other person is paying for it with their own earned wealth.
Thinking that you have ANY BUSINESS doing so is the hallmark of a liberal.
So people with several children will just have to take two or three cars every where they go. That sounds efficient to me...

MRB: Thanks, I am not the best at expressing what I think but I do know that safety and security are not the sum total of freedom.
Samuel Adams’ quote really inspires me. It is shown below.
“If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”
That's one of the valid reasons smaller cars aren't purchased.
If you even READ my posts, I never asked for a blanket ban on SUVs of any sort — I asked for moderation, not the extremist NYTimes “ban-all-SUVs” nor the extemist GreyMR “I’ll-burn-as-much-Saudi-oil-with-US-$-as-I-can” view.
Your definition of freedom as being the right to sell your country down the drain is completely and utterly wrong. I suppose you also oppose nuclear power plants and burning American coal and natural gas?
I’m not sure — you agreeing with me or ? :)
1. “If you even READ my posts, I never asked for a blanket ban on SUVs of any sort I asked for moderation, not the extremist “
Believe me. I have read them that is why I have repeatedly asked you for a list of approved citizens that would be allowed to drive SUV’s. I realize you weren’t calling for a blanket ban just to ban those people that are not as equal as others.
Will you provide a list of approved SUV owners now?
Who will you allow to drive an SUV?
2. “nor the extemist GreyMR Ill-burn-as-much-Saudi-oil-with-US-$-as-I-can view”
I am being categorized as a extremist for allowing people to drive SUVs.
It is not US money. It is the money of the people that earned it.
Come on
3. What else will you consider as extremist?
4. By the way, remember I don’t own an SUV, and I conserve gas every chance I get. More out of necessity that anything.
Cronos, take a deep breath and stick to the argument at hand.
1. I think that people should be allowed to buy and drive SUV’s. How that morphs into you thinking that my definition of freedom is to sell my country down the drain is not logical.
2. You suppose that I oppose nuclear power plants and coal and natural gas? Now if you could stick to the argument at hand you would see how your claim doesn’t make any sense at all.
Again, I clearly stated previously stated that I would pay a premium for American supplied energy (nuclear, oil, gas-—not wind or solar that is currently a bunch of snake oil).
How did you take that statement and come up with I oppose burning American coal and natural gas?
BTW, I have worked in coal plants, steel mills, chemical plants and currently sell control valves to all the above industries. I wish we would get more of our energy from coal, nuclean and natural gas than from oil.
4. MOST IMPORTANT: Do you drive only electric cars right now?
Several? A parent with one may be limited in carpooling given the laws in most states requiring carseats in the back seat till they're 4.5 feet or 12. Two kids in the family, forget carpooling, unless you've got an SUV or van.
No kids is just right, but then there's noone to read the NYT
