Be careful not to offend gay worshippers, Catholic priests warned (by UK bishops)
Daily Mail ^ | 29th November 2008 | Simon Caldwell

Posted on 11/29/2008 11:46:09 AM PST by presidio9

Roman Catholic priests have been banned from using 'heterosexist' language in their churches in case they offend gay worshippers. They have been told by their bishops not to assume that every churchgoer is a heterosexual and to reflect this 'in language and conversation'. 'Remember that homophobic jokes and asides can be cruel and hurtful - a careless word can mean another experience of rejection and pain,' say the bishops in a leaflet advising priests and worshippers how to be more welcoming to gay people.

Priests are also encouraged to put up posters advertising 'support services' for homosexuals, a move bound to infuriate many Catholics who believe gay sexual activity to be sinful. The advice was welcomed by gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell as a 'positive initiative which will bring great comfort to gay Catholics and their families'.

However, he said the 'laudable change of tone' was undermined by the 'homophobic content of the Catholic Catechism' and by Pope Benedict XVI's opposition to gay marriage.

The advice was criticised by Lynette Burrows, a Catholic commentator, as 'pitiful'.

She said it was ridiculous that Church leaders appeared to be ' grovelling' to a secular agenda.

'It is things like this that are enfeebling the Church at the moment - the concentration on things that don't matter and missing the things that do,' she said.

'What is pitiful as well as demeaning is that the Church is running after homosexual opinion but nothing is going to make homosexuals like the Catholic Church.

'This is because the Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is a disorder and whatever the bishops say will not change that.'

Faithful Catholics in UK are going to abandon the official church in droves. The next generation will see empty Catholic pews in the country.

...... gay sexual activity to be sinful.

Who is going to break the news to people that ANY sexual activity outside of marriage is sinful? It does not matter what kind of a caring, loving relationship one is in

It is a pity that some people, and not just homosexuals, will find that news offensive.

The only thing that will save the Church in GB is the appointment of a decent Archbishop of Westminster (who is the Catholic Primate of England). The current one, Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, is terrible, but he’s retiring and some very good people have been mentioned as his replacement. Some bad ones, too, alas, so we shall see...

This should make it pretty tricky to teach that homosexuality is a sin, but the homosexual is loved and can find healing, as many have, through Christ. Now THAT is love.

Or this could have the opposite effect: Unsteady Catholics may abandon the Church, but the faithful will remain. Judging by the homosexual lifestyle, I doubt that a lot of them will start showning up at Mass just because the priest promised to try not to make fun of them. In 30+ years I have never once heard a priest go out of his way to insult gays.

Sounds like the Bishop has gone queer like the Anglican Archbishop.

I suspect that God is not happy!

Now if they can just take out that offensive anti-gay language in the bible.....

I’m sure God will understand how wrong He is...

So much for the ‘’tolerance’’ and ‘’diversity’’ crowd. But the Brits are cowed by any group these days. Pole-smokers and carpet-munchers should be no different.

‘homophobic content’...

Words mean things!

There is no “fear of homosexuals” in Catholic teaching!

There is disapproval of homosexual behavior as there is disapproval of every other offense against God!

The proper place of refuge for good Catholics is the Tridentine (Latin) Mass or certain other rites which respect tradition and God’s word.

*sigh*

When is the last time somebody got excommunicated from the Church for something less severe than heading a communist revolution?
