Online Petition Thanks LDS Church For Prop. 8 Support (Mormons Backed By Social Conservatives Alert)
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 11/25/2008 | Peggy Fletcher Stack

Posted on 11/25/2008 9:47:13 PM PST by goldstategop

More than 3,000 people, including longtime Mormon critic James Dobson of Focus on the Family, have signed an online petition thanking the LDS Church for its efforts on behalf of California's traditional marriage initiative known as Proposition 8.

"Anyone who participated in this process has come to admire the competence, diligence and moral courage that so many members of your faith community displayed as part of this coalition effort -- as Catholics, Evangelicals, Mormons and people of other faith communities all came together to fight this great battle for marriage," says the petition, which is addressed to LDS President Thomas S. Monson.

The petition condemns recent protests against Mormon temples and members, saying: "It is deeply unfair, and contrary to the best American traditions, that any faith community, much less a minority one, should be singled out and attacked in this way by powerful, well-funded political forces determined to 'make them pay' for participating in the normal political processes of democracy."

The online effort was created by the National Organization for Marriage, a nonprofit group in Princeton, N.J., organized to lobby, organize and collect donations on behalf of ballot measures defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman.

"We wanted to do something to show we are united in our condemnation of religious bigotry of any form," Brian Brown, NOM's executive director, said Tuesday.

The organization includes Advertisement

people of various faith groups, including Catholics, and Evangelicals. Matthew Holland, son of LDS Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, is on the board of directors.

The letter to Monson was written Nov. 15 and signed by representatives of several pro-family groups in addition to Dobson's, including Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association, Charles Colson of Prison Fellowship, Tony Perkins of Family Research Council, Paul Weyrich of Free Congress Foundation, Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Gary Bauer of American Values. It was presented to Monson almost immediately.

This week, organizers posted the petition at abovethehate.com and invited the public to sign.

"We've been amazed by the outpouring of support," Brown said. "People are so grateful that we are standing side by side with [Mormons]."

Organizers will continue to collect signatures for another month, he said, and present the final list to Monson sometime after that.

Also on Tuesday, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote to Monson, offering "prayerful support and steadfast solidarity" to the LDS Church for its efforts on behalf of Proposition 8.

"We have been especially troubled by the reports of explicit and direct targeting of your church personnel and facilities as the objects of hostility and abuse," the bishops wrote. "We pray that prudence and healing may prevail."

Elsie I can honestly say you have opened my eyes

, the comments like well they started it, or your verses, or the pictures you did.

I am amazed I seriously am.

Thankfully the majority of us have moved on and realise we did good coming together as Christians to defeat these homo’s.

To everyone else I hope all us Christians will come together as we did this time and lets defeat them wherever they try to further their agenda

you said And they (individuals; who did exactly as their leaders told them to do) are complaining that 'others did not do enough'. They equate disagreements over their religion as HATE. Come on, you've seen it in this thread. My reply to Elsie and the hate she mentions Yes you are right there has been hate shown on this thread Elsie and I know where we see it plus bigotry and prejudice with the I don't like them because they don't worship the proper God bla bla or they started it.

Just to mention Elsie on the mormon thread and her refusal to sign it.

I cannot believe she has a deep disgust towards mormons just becasuse they practice their religion to hers and she somes out with her verses then followed by the they started it by saying we didn’t do enough .

Thankfully I can only assume she is a minority as I know of no one like that where I live but I was wondering if you do where you live

In the past, MORMON's did NOT want to be known as 'christians' and now they do.

I wonder why?

I've got no problem with Mormons. The Mormons I have known have been, in the main, good people.

I do have a problem with a certain Republican politician who hides his liberal positions behind his Mormonism and has his supporters call anyone who opposes him on legitimate policy grounds a "hater."

Elsie, here’s thought for you.
Only have to send one message not a ton of them when replying it might be easier

anyway

so sad
so they never, really???????????????????????????????
How did you base that idea of yours?????????????????.
I’ve always had them down and still do as Christains and it what we were taught at school, Sunday school and church.
But hey Elsie you don’t.
Ah well

at least many of us christian church goers and non church christian goers have now realised that we can win despite some in our ranks who seem to have a prejudice to others way of worship.

Let me ask you something Elsie as I have never talked to someone like you before so this question is really out of astonishment /shock/ and disbelief.

You seem to have a thing against Mormons based on because they do not practise their faith exactly like yours,
Why?

Is it just Mormons you have a problem with or is it other sections of Christianity like other Mormons, catholics, baptists, southern baptists Lutherans, Methodist episcopalians etc?.

Why do you keep giving loads of verses?

Despite your , well I will say resentment Elsie to Mormons the fact is they did well, they did help us to win this as did many others non religious and religious, they were well organised and my hat is tipped to every Mormon christian who donated and signed the prop.

Thank you to all religious and non religious folk, Christians including Mormons Elsie and non Christians.
Let us fight the next battle together again and defeat them wherever they push their agenda

I do have a problem with a certain Republican politician who hides his liberal positions behind his Mormonism and has his supporters call anyone who opposes him on legitimate policy grounds a "hater."

The tactic is SUPPOSED to deflect your attention away from HIS faults and put YOU on the defensive - trying to prove you AIN'T a hater.

they’re christian, and no matter how many of your verses you keep doing Elsie .

It has been interesting Elsie especially your not so positive view of Mormons, so you keep fighting the fight Elsie hey and you keep preaching your verses to back your view up of Mormons and I’m sure others will find your view interesting too.

As for verse preaching to me, well I have no idea what they mean like I said as I am not all that religious but I do respect those who go to church so long as they do not have a bigoted view of another religion because it is different to theirs.

As for the enemy and your picture of the devil giving flowers well the enemy is liberals who laugh at the likes of you Elsie and homo’s who make fun of you on their freak parades.
is that who the picture of the devil is or do you class Mormons as the enemy instead or all.?

I am every curious in your reply to that question, so thank you in advance

look forward to reading your answer

they’re christian, and no matter how many of your verses you keep doing Elsie .

Strange that the leaders of the MORMON past did not think much of CHRISTIANS...

Statements by Mormon Leaders about Christian churches (made by many of the LDS Prophet-Presidents):

Joseph Smith stated that God told him: "they [other churches] were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt" (from Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith-History 1:19).

Joseph Smith continues: "for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible" (from Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith-History 1:12). "What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.270).

Questions put to Joseph Smith: "'Do you believe the Bible?' [Smith:]'If we do, we are the only people under heaven that does, for there are none of the religious sects of the day that do'. When asked 'Will everybody be damned, but Mormons'? [Smith replied] 'Yes, and a great portion of them, unless they repent, and work righteousness." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 119).

Brigham Young stated this repeatedly: "When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was grovelling in darkness" (Journal of Discourses 5:73); "The Christian world, so-called, are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God" (Journal of Discourses 8:171); "With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world" (Journal of Discourses 8:199); "And who is there that acknowledges [God's] hand? ...You may wander east, west, north, and south, and you cannot find it in any church or government on the earth, except the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p.24); "Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity" (Journal of Discourses 10:230).

Orson Pratt proclaimed: "Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the 'whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent" (The Seer, p. 255).

Pratt also said: "This great apostasy commenced about the close of the first century of the Christian era, and it has been waxing worse and worse from then until now" (Journal of Discourses, vol.18, p.44) and: "But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be ...But there has been a long apostasy, during which the nations have been cursed with apostate churches in great abundance" (Journal of Discourses, 18:172).

President John Taylor stated: "Christianity...is a perfect pack of nonsense...the devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth century." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p.167); "Where shall we look for the true order or authority of God? It cannot be found in any nation of Christendom." (Journal of Discourses, 10:127).
James Talmage said: "A self-suggesting interpretation of history indicates that there has been a great departure from the way of salvation as laid down by the Savior, a universal apostasy from the Church of Christ". (A Study of the Articles of Faith, p.182).

President Joseph Fielding Smith said: "Doctrines were corrupted, authority lost, and a false order of religion took the place of the gospel of Jesus Christ, just as it had been the case in former dispensations, and the people were left in spiritual darkness." (Doctrines of Salvation, p.266). "For hundreds of years the world was wrapped in a veil of spiritual darkness, until there was not one fundamental truth belonging to the place of salvation ...Joseph Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him that all the 'Christian' churches were in error, teaching for commandments the doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 3, p.282).

More recent statements by apostle Bruce McConkie are also very clear: "Apostasy was universal...And this darkness still prevails except among those who have come to a knowledge of the restored gospel" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol 3, p.265); "Thus the signs of the times include the prevailing apostate darkness in the sects of Christendom and in the religious world in general" (The Millennial Messiah, p.403); "a perverted Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate Christendom" (Mormon Doctrine, p.132); "virtually all the millions of apostate Christendom have abased themselves before the mythical throne of a mythical Christ whom they vainly suppose to be a spirit essence who is incorporeal uncreated, immaterial and three-in-one with the Father and Holy Spirit" (Mormon Doctrine, p.269); "Gnosticism is one of the great pagan philosophies which antedated Christ and the Christian Era and which was later commingled with pure Christianity to form the apostate religion that has prevailed in the world since the early days of that era." (Mormon Doctrine, p.316).

President George Q. Cannon said: "After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon" (Gospel Truth, p.324).

President Wilford Woodruff stated: "the Gospel of modern Christendom shuts up the Lord, and stops all communication with Him. I want nothing to do with such a Gospel, I would rather prefer the Gospel of the dark ages, so called" (Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p.196).

Yes, the MORMONs have been SO sweet and nice over the years to 'fellow' Christians!

Sigh...

The ENEMY is the Devil; the MORMONs are deceived by him.

MORMONs are NOT the 'enemy'; MORMONism IS the enemy of Christianity.
