At least John McCain is back to his old self. This assumes, of course, at some point he wasn't.
Believe me, he was. (See the entire 2008 campaign).
He's back to being the crotchety old Republicrat spitfire, Mac the Mav.
That reach-across-the-aisle, strolling-down-the-median joie de vivre he possesses (and can beckon at will) is throttling up for the new administration.

Since the time is just about right for McCain to ride the wave of ascendancy back into the good graces of the media (who, you'll recall, once upon a time, had rockets in their pockets for him when he was still their beloved "maverick," only to turn on him once he became the lead obstacle for "The One"), what better way to worm his way back into fishwrap favor than to get "comprehensive" with illegal immigration?
You remember that golden nugget, don't you?
It was all the rage in 2007.
It looks as though it'll make a hasty return in the early going of the Obama Chronicles next year, according to Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid.
Speaking to the Detroit Free Press, Reid said:
On immigration, there's been an agreement between (President-elect Barack) Obama and (Arizona Republican Sen. John) McCain to move forward on that. ... We'll do that. We have to get this economy stuff figured out first, so I think we'll have a shot at doing something on health care in the next Congress for sure. ... We've got McCain and we've got a few others. I don't expect much of a fight at all. Now health care is going to be difficult. That's a very complicated issue. We debated at great length immigration. People understand the issues very well. We have not debated health care, so that's going to take a lot more time to do.
Everyone who saw this coming, go grab an "attaboy" out of petty cash. (Don't worry, there are a ton of them in there).
If, however, for some reason, McCain finds himself too busy bucking his own side of the auditorium during the next session of Congress to blow kisses over to the Dems, no worries...

Needless to say, Obama's new "border boys" aren't thrilling anyone on our side. While many of "The One's" other appointments thus far have proven slightly less than horrible - even though none of them would be on my fifth string team - I get that queasy kind of uneasy looking at those who will be charged with formulating "sound immigration policy" for the United States.
As Tyche Hendricks of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote:

Once I reached the words "scholars from the Bay Area," I walked.
Here's a question ... In terms of how many months after Bam's inaguration, how long until the borders look like - what my mother used to call my room - who-did-it-and-ran?

Where are all you guys who told us McCain was so wonderful and we had to support him?
This shows what a McCain presidency would have been like.
And it shows that no matter how the Coleman and Chambliss races turn out, with McCain and Specter and Snowe and Collins and Graham the Democrats already have a filibuster-proof majority.
Just relax and enjoy the next four years. It will be a lot of entertainment and we will have a lot of fixing up to do.

Which reminds me: How did SC allow Lindsay to be re-elected.

Obviously SC voters aren’t as obsessed with the issue of immigration as some here made them out to be.
Save your money. Amnesty is a sure thing. There is nothing you can do to stop it.
We have a bunch of party hacks here.
Several weeks before the election, I got into a rather heated debate with another SC FReeper who was all about "party over principal". To this individual, it did not matter what a candidate's policies or record was, as long as they have an "R" by their name, we should support them.
I disagree, and said so until the other party's argument was reduced to insults and name calling.
Bob Conley was, in my opinion, far preferable to Lindsay Graham. But because the Democrats in SC are thrilled with Graham, (What does THAT tell you?) Conley couldn't get any support from his own party. Light in the loafers Lindsay had a warchest of 4.5 million, while Conley had almost enough to buy a pack of peanuts and a Coke to pour them in.
As far as I am concerned, the Republican party in SC is dead. We not only have Lindsay, but we have Bob Ingles (R(ino), and even Gresham Barrett (who voted FOR the "bailout").
It's no wonder that the Democrats aren't bothering to run serious candidates in SC. They are toppling the Republicans from within.
Oh, and don't forget the "maverick's" (barf) big win in SC helped put him over the top.
The Republican Party (as we knew it) is DEAD in SC.
Send flowers.

We were afraid Bob Conley would get to Washington, and be cowed in to towing the party line. Oh, and there's that filibuster proof majority thing, too!

You would need at least 45 “true conservative republican” senators for the democrats to have a fillibuster proof majority. And Lindsey ain’t one of them.
Which is why I got over this election as quickly as I did. Sure, it would have been better with Sarah as VPOTUS, but crotchety old McCain was not suited to be a President after 20+ years as a Senator.
