Overwhelmed by piles of junk mail, 'Mailman Steve' quit bringing it to the people on his North Carolina route. Customers are grateful. The Direct Marketing Assn., however, is not amused.
Sick of junk mail?
Pay homage, then, to overstressed, overworked mailman Steven Padgett, who has confessed to a cardinal sin among the letter carriers tribe: He failed to deliver.
"Mailman Steve" -- a pudgy, kindly 58-year-old who toiled along a route in a rapidly growing neighborhood here -- was given probation in federal court this week for squirreling away at least seven years' worth of undelivered junk mail, which he had stacked in his garage and buried in his yard.
According to his attorney, Padgett felt overwhelmed by the torrents of "direct advertising mail" he was obligated to deliver as he contended with heart problems and diabetes.
It should come as no surprise that the U.S. Postal Service did not receive a single complaint from Padgett's customers about missing mail during the years he withheld pizza circulars, oil change discount notices and Chinese menus.

Rolling Stone pulled that with me. I think it was a dodge to make their circulation figures appear higher and justify their advertising premiums, and perhaps they hope that I will become confused and pay for a renewal when the 'subscription' ends.
Well, I do plenty of reading and don't have either the time or the inclination for this nonsense. I did find however, that a rolled-up copy of Rolling Stone is a superior implement for dispatching household vermin.
Who am I? Obama? And what are you? An ignorant, helpless liberal? Do a Google search on how to be removed from direct mail lists....
Why should I have to go to the trouble of opting out of junk mail? It’s MY box I paid for it with MY money. I never gave spammers permission to fill it full of their crap every day.
I never asked for you dump your crap into my mailbox in the first place. It is the same thing as spam.
That is equivalent to my dumping my trash can onto your porch and then telling you it’s your fault and you must be the one to go to the trouble of making me stop.
The spammer is the active party.
Don’t like it? Lobby to get the laws changed. In the meantime quit acting like a liberal....
LOL, AS! Good one.
Oh, I agree. What the guy did was wrong. I bet he was having a bad day and decided that he would deliver that stuff the next day. If I am remembering correctly, they time the routes and he was probably feeling pressured. He probably did that a few times then the next thing he knew, he had monkey on his back that was now bigger than he could deal with.
Quit acting like a liberal? Not even close.
A liberal would go whine to government.
I’m not doing that.
I’m merely asking a spammer to keep his crap off my property.
Sorry. No can do....
Well, we all have to make a living. :)
No hard feelings, my man. It’s no big deal.
The reality is that 44% of people throw “junk” mail away without looking at it. Ultimately 93% of it is thrown away. The 7% that people look at (for pizza coupons, A/C discounts, 50% off oil changes, and 2 for 1 dinners) makes me and my clients very good money....
What about those of us who do not want to RECEIVE your junk mail?
If I am currently doing business with someone, fine, send me information. If I am NOT doing business with you, keep your junk OUT of MY mailbox, OK?
So you’re a SPAMMER? Why would you be posting on THIS site? I DO NOT WANT YOUR JUNK CLUTTERING MY MAILBOX SO I HAVE TO WASTE MY TIME AND ENERGY AND TRASHCAN SPACE TO RID MYSELF OF YOUR BULLBLEEP!
Mailman Steve is committing a felony.
Oh, and maybe you should find another line of work... HONEST work, this time.
Yea but if your paid a bit deliver cause if not you are the pits.
Tuesday is Trash Day.
Great character.
But, Harry just kept the junkmail and then once a month dropped it off at the houses.
The snail service CALLS us its “customers” so I should be able to NOT have that garbage put in MY mailbox. Period. Maybe have it shipped back to freebilly at HIS expense every day.
