Overwhelmed by piles of junk mail, 'Mailman Steve' quit bringing it to the people on his North Carolina route. Customers are grateful. The Direct Marketing Assn., however, is not amused.
Sick of junk mail?
Pay homage, then, to overstressed, overworked mailman Steven Padgett, who has confessed to a cardinal sin among the letter carriers tribe: He failed to deliver.
"Mailman Steve" -- a pudgy, kindly 58-year-old who toiled along a route in a rapidly growing neighborhood here -- was given probation in federal court this week for squirreling away at least seven years' worth of undelivered junk mail, which he had stacked in his garage and buried in his yard.
According to his attorney, Padgett felt overwhelmed by the torrents of "direct advertising mail" he was obligated to deliver as he contended with heart problems and diabetes.
It should come as no surprise that the U.S. Postal Service did not receive a single complaint from Padgett's customers about missing mail during the years he withheld pizza circulars, oil change discount notices and Chinese menus.

I’ve always wondered why these guys always get caught with the stuff they didn’t deliver. Burn it, take it to the dump, whatever. But stacking it up in the garage just doesn’t make sense
Our mailman doesn’t deliver junk mail on Saturdays ever. I do wonder if he trashes it or just delivers it on Monday, but I really don’t care enough to ask.
“Lucifer’s Hammer.”
One of my all-time favorite books, and yes, Harry the Mailman did exactly this. (And also got into trouble.)
Regards,
Y'all give this poor victim a break, would'ya?
Crikey...
Hmm... that's a damn good idea. I hate all mail, junk and first class. I can't remember the last time I received anything I actually wanted.
You going to trust a government employee to ONLY trash things you don’t want to read?
I count on those oil change coupons!
Junk mail wouldn't survive if it weren't for the fact that the Government establishes and supports and funds and props up the USPS. I for one don't give a damn what the "clients" want. Stop using my f*****ng money to annoy me.
The US Postal Service is one of my pet peeves anyway.
I would never assume someone else knows what I do and don’t want to see, whether or not its first class mail.
He wasn’t accused of throwing away anything but junk mail.
Most junk mail goes to every house or apartment so there is no sorting; just put it in the box.
Junk mail with specific adddresses have bar codes so they are sorted electronically.
In reality, junk mail subsidizes regular mail and is more profitable than regular mail.
yes, and I have acknowledged that, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t and also doesnt mean he wouldn’t have eventually. There have been similar cases in the past and they started out with a bag of mail here or there.
If you want some government employee to decide what ads you can and can’t see that’s your business.
Please add me to your “Stop putting this unsolicited crap in MY mailbox” list. Thanks.
