UK militant 'killed in Pakistan'
BBC ^ | 22 November 2008 | BBC

Posted on 11/22/2008 2:53:31 AM PST by csvset

A fugitive British militant linked to an alleged UK plot to use liquid bombs to blow up transatlantic airliners has been killed in Pakistan, reports say.

Pakistani media said Rashid Rauf, born in Birmingham, was killed in a US air strike in North Waziristan, a haven for militants and the Taleban.

Mr Rauf, on the run after escaping from a Pakistani jail, was alleged to have helped the group planning the attacks.

Three men were convicted in the UK in September of conspiracy to murder.

News of the liquid bomb plot paralysed global air travel, prompting authorities to implement stringent security measures at airports around the world.

Rashid Rauf was arrested in Pakistan on 9 August 2006, at the request of US authorities, who feared he was about to disappear into the remote north-west of the country.

ARTICLE SNIPPET from your link in post no. 1:

“Several Pakistani TV channels reported that Mr Rauf was one of five people killed on Saturday by a presumed US attack in the country’s remote north-western region.

Unnamed Pakistani intelligence sources said that a wanted Egyptian militant, Abu Zubair al-Masri, was among the others killed.

However, the BBC has so far been unable to independently confirm the news.”

The new Paki prez is really pissed at the terrorists for whacking his wife (can’t blame him,Bhutto was a babe).
Giving lip service to the international left and his own Islamists, griping about naughty NATO incursions on his turf,he is letting our special forces murder the murdering bastards by the bushel in the border regions.
If Bin Laden is alive we will get him and when we find either his filthy person or rotted corpse,I DARE,if it happens after Jan 20,that lying Marxist weasel in the Oval Office to take credit for it!

Rauf married a relative of one of Pakistan's most notorious militant leaders, Azhar Masood Azhar, the head of Jaish-e-Mohammad the leading terrorist group in Kashmir.

Nice hit. Abu Zubair al-Masri was part of the "Egyptian Mafia" that runs AQ with Zawahiri.

The BBC are saying that this ‘Englishman’ has been killed. Methinks you will get a stern letter from the Home Office for killing a UK citizen.

Well done America!

Pakistan is "protesting" these cross border drone AC strikes.

Whining like the dickens.

The intell, covert ops, mission cycle is very , very quick to do these things and it is working.

Every time the monster grows a new head, we lop it off, and this really puts a cramp in their command structy-ure, disorganizes the Taliban, and allows us to out flank them and interdict them inside Afghanistan.

We really need to support these efforts.

When the Obammffa is in office, these strikes will come to an end.

And millions of Afghanis will suffer.

My assertion that the Paki's allowed him to " escape " are borne out.

UK terror suspect was linked to Masood Azhar

Sunday, November 23, 2008
LAHORE: A high-level probe ordered by the Pakistani authorities into the 2007 dramatic escape of the British terror plot suspect Rashid Rauf from police custody had concluded that he had fled with the collusion of the police and some Jaish-e-Mohammad-linked militants while he was being transported to the Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi after a court appearance.

Rashid Rauf, who is reported to have been killed in the North Waziristan area on Friday in a US missile strike along with four other al-Qaeda-linked militants, was arrested on August 9, 2007 from a Jaish-e-Mohammad-run seminary, the Madrassa Madina, situated in the Model Town area of Bahawalpur. He was arrested a couple of days before the British crackdown and arrests of the main plotters in London. Rashid Rauf became the focus of world attention after being named by the British intelligence as the main plotter of a terrorist plan to blow up the US-bound British airliners with the help of liquid explosives. He was arrested in Pakistan after a tip-off from British anti-terrorism authorities, days before a series of August 2006 raids and arrests in Britain of eight men accused of conspiring to smuggle liquid bombs on board a series of Atlantic flights. However, almost 16 months after his arrest, Rashid escaped from the police custody under mysterious circumstances, at a time the British government had officially requested Pakistan to extradite him to London.

A subsequent inquiry into his December 15 escape dismissed claims by Rauf’s police guards that he had slipped away after being allowed to pray in a mosque. The report of the probe committee described as concocted the claim made by his two police guards that he mysteriously disappeared from the mosque. “The escape was made good in the vicinity of F-8 Markaz, the district court in Islamabad, and right after the hearing. Therefore, it is not a case of negligence, but a case of criminal collusion with the accused and facilitating him to escape. F-8 Markaz is located in the heart of Islamabad. Police constables Mohammad Tufail and Nawabzada, who were guarding Rauf, had claimed that he had slipped out of the back door of a mosque after they allowed him to offer afternoon prayers there,” stated the probe report.

Those conducting the inquiry had also reportedly questioned Mufti Abdul Rauf, the younger brother of the Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Maulana Masood Azhar for his alleged involvement in bribing the police constables on duty. The mobile phone call record of the two constables suggested that Nawabzada and Tufail talked to each other at least three times after Rauf went missing besides making numerous other phone calls, probably to some militants who had masterminded the escape plan. Interestingly, the location of constable Nawabzada was a private bus stand near Choor (from where Rauf was taken to his next destination) while Tufail was somewhere else, whereas both claimed that they had been guarding Rauf.

As soon as Rashid Rauf escaped, the authorities arrested from Bahawalpur two of the five younger brothers of Masood Azhar and two of his six brothers-in-law. The arrests were made because of the fact that Rashid Rauf was the brother-in-law of one of Masood Azhar’s younger brother, Mohammad Tahir. Following the arrest of his two sons and two sons-in-law, Hafiz Allah Bukhsh, the father of Masood Azhar, told media people in Bahawalpur that Rashid was a member of the Jaish but left it to join the rivals who were more interested in promoting al-Qaeda’s anti-Western agenda. “He was member of our group but later he deserted us and joined the Jamaatul Furqaan, led by a Jaish dissident, Maulana Abdul Jabbar,” Allah Bukhsh said at the Jaish headquarters in Bahawalpur in December 2007. “Our cause is the liberation of Jammu and Kashmir, while their main cause is Afghanistan. They are anti-American but we are not,” Bukhsh added.

To a question, Bukhsh said he spoke with Rashid Rauf several times after he left the Jaish and conceded that the Briton was related by marriage to one of his own sons, Mohammad Tahir. In Bahawalpur, he added, Rashid Rauf was known as Mohammad Khalid Rauf who has two young daughters (at that time) -ó one less than a year old and the other around two years old. On August 17, 2007, a senior Pakistani official conceded that the British airport terror plot was sanctioned by Dr Ayman Zawahiri and that Rashid was the planner of the attacks. However, on December 13, 2007, the terrorism charges on Rashid were dropped as the court ruled that there was no evidence of him being involved in planning any terrorist activity.

Two days later, on December 15, 2007, as pressure mounted from Britain for his extradition, Rashid Rauf mysteriously escaped from the police custody, only to be killed in North Waziristan in a US air strike 11 months later, thus confirming the British intelligence reports that he had been an active member of the Osama-led terror organisation.

“Al Qaeda operative Rashid Rauf survived US strike”
By BILL ROGGIO
April 12, 2009 12:43 PM

SNIPPET: “A senior al Qaeda leader who was reported to have been killed during a US airstrike in Pakistan’s tribal areas is now thought to have survived the attack and has been plotting terror attacks in Europe.

Rashid Rauf, an al Qaeda leader who is in charge of al Qaeda’s external operations branch responsible for attacks in Europe, survived the November 2008 Predator strike in North Waziristan that was also thought to have killed Abu Zubair al Masri and two other al Qaeda operatives.

US intelligence believes that al Qaeda has reconstituted its external operations network in Pakistan’s lawless, Taliban-controlled tribal areas. This network is tasked with hitting targets in the West, India, and elsewhere. Al Qaeda is particularly interested in recruiting westernized Muslims with western passports, which would allow them to more easily enter their target countries. The Predator campaign is largely designed to prevent al Qaeda from conducting another major attack in the West.

The assessment that Rauf had been killed changed, after an al Qaeda operative detained during a raid in Belgium claimed that Rauf had trained him and dispatched him to Brussels to conduct a suicide attack during a meeting of European leaders, The Times Online reported. The operative also said Rauf had plotted attacks in major cities in Belgium, France, Holland, and England. Rauf has also been implicated as being the director of the failed plot to conduct attacks in England on Easter Sunday.”
