Gallup: 59% of Republicans want GOP to become more conservative

No specifics on the how and why, but since party orthodoxy’s already firmly hawkish, pro-life, anti-gay marriage, and anti-amnesty (among the grassroots, at least, on that last one), presumably what we’re talking about here is spending and bailout backlash. Shouldn’t be a problem: The One will give the GOP’s congressional minority plenty to dislike, including a bailout of the Big Three to pound the table about. No?

The House, at least, is heading right:

Pence, who was unanimously voted in as the Republican Conference Chairman on Wednesday, told CNSNews.com that conservatism is the current trend among House Republicans.

“What I saw today in the Republican conference was an affirmation that the way back for the Republican Party is a return to timeless principles,” Pence told CNSNews.com. “My unanimous selection was not so much an affirmation of me as a person, but my conservative principles.”

Both Mica and Flake also told CNSNews.com that the conference is experiencing a shift towards the right. “Sure,” Flake told CNSNews.com when asked if there had been a shift. “Fiscal conservatives have more of a voice here now.”

Er...doesn't the GOP have to be conservative before we can start to wish it were more conservative? The GOP is an image of this entire past election cycle. It's simply the best of the worst, which means it's still one of the worst. It's Democrat-Lite.

We won't support best of the worst again. We're all stinging from where that got us last time. :-)

Can I add my affirmative vote to that poll as well?

Oh they're around, right here on our own Free Republic.

Robert, I thought you said you were in the majority? It appears you're actually in the minority of the Republican Party.

Not "Conservative" Enough

Newsflash! You are the RINO because you are not among the Republican majority. Help us build the GOP into a party for the 21st century or get out of the way. Your attempts to drag the party back into the past will not be tolerated.

Who in the heck make up the other 41%?

Most are from the northeast. Some are in congress, some have talk shows, some write for the NYT. They ought to do us a favor and drop the charade and go over to the jackass party.

If they do not go “right” they are dead in the water. Back to the days of Barry Goldwater. If the GOP had stood fast and ran a conservative program with a conservative person (not Nixon) we would not be in the mess we are in today. The defeat of Goldwater by a huge margin scared the GOP and they have been running scared and stupid ever since. And look where we are.

I remember waaaay back when. The ‘Pubs in the ‘94 election talked about eliminating the Dept of Education. IOW, cutting spending and devolving government. Some good things happened-that made Clinton look good-but it stopped there. Cut the fed government by 2/3. If you can’t, then let us go for incrementalism - like the Dems.

If conservatism means actually abolishing federal agencies and protecting my right to bear arms, then I’m all for it. If it means crusading for “democracy” and for embracing “populism” then I will stay home.

When that number gets to 90% give me a call and I might call myself a Republican again.

Agreed. I am seeing a lot of these pompous a-hole RINOs - even here on these boards - running around talking about “getting along with the Dems” like it is possible. It is not...it is just not possible...

“Sounds good on the surface until you stop to actually think that even if 5% of Republicans were to jump ship, the party would be effectively neutered. What the “we need purge” crowd doesn’t seem to comprehend is that margins are narrow. We can’t afford to lose any votes.”

Perhaps we could become Democrats???

“What I want to know is this: who are the knuckleheads that are in the other 41%??

People who enjoy losing. ;) “

And then blame it on conservatives rather than get out of the squishy middle with the democrats.

It will not make any difference which way the GOP swings. Until you have to pass a small test to become a voter, the Rats have it until the welfare is cut off.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but when lowlifes learned they could vote for Robin Hood to rob the rich (producers) and pay the poor(Lazy),its over with until their right to vote is removed.

From the ashes of defeat, a phoenix slowly rises.

Ronald Reagan's speech to CPAC in 1975, "Let Them Go Their Way" is the most inspiring template for conservative success you can ever read.

Reagan’s 1975 CPAC speech DEFINES conservatism and lays the foundation for what the Republican (or an emerging third party) MUST be.

Or that PLUS putting your money where your mouth is on social issues and small government.
