I need some positive reasons why not to plan for a SHTF scenario.

Posted on 11/16/2008 3:15:11 PM PST by rfmad

I am seriously thinking of taking to steps to go to a survivalist approach planning to survuve total chaos and financial and institutional break down. Some one please help me see why this is not going to happen. Thanks

That might be pushing it, but I’ve not been 3-day hungry for many a year.

“To their credit, the Mormons keep a list of things which they are required to have on hand: “

The Fox Fire books are also a good source for this type of information.

Hint for inexpensive storage, Reynolds or ziploc vacuum storage systems. Renolds takes batteries and performs better, ziploc does not.

Cheers

One should always plan for shtf. The degree to which one’s preparations fall outside normal daily function depend on the situation. Planning and prep are never a bad thing. By taking an objective look at your current situation, what would be needed for continued function (continuity of operations, or COOP), and the difference between the two can shed some light on one’s needs and requirements.

.02, free advice, “ya get what ya pay for.”

Cheers

If you really intend to go survivalist, what are your plans about where you’ll do this. All the guns, ammunition, water and non-perishable foods won’t do you much good if you live in the city or suburbs. Do you have a place where the mobs or whatever can’t easily find you? If not, and you’re serious, your first step is to find a hiddy-hole. Depending upon where you live, that can be very easy or very difficult.

Agreed. We’ll be back up and running in a few years.

And that’s a lot of our problem. We can’t make a living in Podunk, Arkansas. If we could we’d all move there and it, too, would become a big city.

This has nothing to do with Barack on more to do with our Affirmative Action economy. I know local auto dealers that are fearing they are going to have to close down.

Was that a Three Time Comment? :)

To answer the original poster - I have been preparing for SHTF for a good many years now. I don’t regret it. I can now grow my own food and have learned the art of canning. The only thing I have yet to do is build me a well. Kept putting it off for the longest time but now I’m gonna get motivated to do that.

I can only speak for myself. All of my investments, 401K, etc. are in cash or short term money markets. Except a little in a mutual fund that is more like a hedge fund - all the positions are hedged with puts, and a little in a bond fund. I’m nervous mostly about the bond fund since last week’s auction wasn’t met with high fives and handshakes. Despite the deflationary pressures that surround us, the market’s not lovingly embracing the long rates right now which it should be. Says the market’s too flooded with money right now - but companies are slowing down; weird. The corporates in that fund are basically boasting depression yields.

So if you’re REALLY nervous, go to cash or if your 401k won’t allow cash, go to the shortest term money market fund you can find. You can go to cash in most IRAs.

The only silver lining I’ve seen of O’Bomber’s promises (hedge that), is that he would allow penalty free withdrawals from IRAs. Not tax free (of course not!). But you could still get your money (if he doesn’t first).

Actually, the guy was my First Sargeant in the NG. Said he started eating them because he belived the Top got to eat last and that was all that was left. He said over time, he learned to like them. I don’t know. I tried them one time and that was enough.

Why would anyone think that the election of Barack Obama would lead to a complete breakdown of social order?

Has little to do with that. Started this with Sputnik.

Prepare for societal meltdown. And, never forget who the enemy is and that they are to be dealt with in manners that cannot be negotiable. I.e., with extreme prejudice.

Well, I for one think it is a wonderful idea and I have been looking at supplies. It never hurts to be prepared. I live in tornado alley and it does not hurt to be supplied for disasters like that, too. I think you had better do some reading.

Evidently, you have not done much reading over the past few months. Get to it!

Begin by reading the books by William W. Johnstone, especially the OUT OF THE ASHES series.

I look at everything in today’s mix and have concerns that I never had before. Same sex marriage and its backer’s hatred, coupled with our moves toward socialism and the banking scandals....I believe it is wise to prepare for a different future, one that is not all roses.

I’m a former boy scout....failure to prepare.....

Who’s running for the hills? I’m staying put and making sure my property is fertilized with the leaking fluids of erstwhile “tyrants”.

Ok... I've been on FR for a few years now. While many have given great advice to always prepare for disasters, like having more than 10 days of food on hand I have never noticed the fever pitch as the election has brought. It has been my observation the FReepers usually don't go this far out on a limb. They tend to be rather...conservative in nature.

When FReepers are getting concerned, anxious, and worried one pays attention. In case you are wondering what is all the worry perhaps the ongoing economic situation, the call by Obama to bankrupt coal, the re-institution of NO Drill policies, the seizure of 401K & IRA assets, the Civilian Defense Corp... all of which will crumple the social order and systems. There is actually a long list of concerns and it grows daily.
