Playing the race card on gay marriage
By Jeff Jacoby
http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | It has been widely noted that black voters put California's Proposition 8 over the top last week, with nearly 7 out of 10 voting in favor of the constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. As the magnitude of black opposition to same-sex marriage became clear on Election Day, blogger Andrew Sullivan, a prominent gay-marriage champion, reacted bitterly:
"Every ethnic group supported marriage equality," he wrote, "except African-Americans, who voted overwhelmingly against extending to gay people the civil rights once denied them."
Well, let's see. The civil rights once denied to black Americans included the right to register as a voter, the right to cast a ballot, the right to use numerous public facilities, the right to get a fair hearing in court, the right to send their children to an integrated public school, and the right to equal opportunity in housing and employment. Have gay people been denied any of these rights? Have they been forced to sit in the back of buses? Confined to segregated neighborhoods? Barred from serving on juries? Subjected to systematic economic exploitation?

RE , “except African-Americans, who voted overwhelmingly against extending to gay people the civil rights once denied them.”
Sweet irony!
RE , except African-Americans, who voted overwhelmingly against extending to gay people the civil rights once denied them. Sweet irony!Andrew Sullivan, whom Jacoby quoted, forgot to point out that Latinos voted overwhelmingly. I grew up in the west side of Long Beach. A map shows that every precinct on the west side voted in favor of Prop. 8. The west side of Long Beach is predominantly Latino and Asian.

It's also "crowding the franchise"--blacks don't want gays crowding their "grievance guild." They don't want to share.
I agree with your analysis, and add my cynical one.
How dare these blacks and Latinos vote against rich whites who only want happiness through total acceptance and approval of their perverse lifestyle??There is definitely a class divide on Prop 8. Note that measure lost mostly in upper-middle to upper-class precincts.
Ah, the race card on gay marriage. That would be the one-eyed Jack.
why do they equate their agenda to the black struggle
blacks were not allowed to vote
use bathrooms
sit on a bus in certain places
not get a job
etc
etc
the homosexuals have nothing like that , all they are doing is saying listen I like another man and like having sex with them so I should be married but that other man who wants to have 4 wives cannot or that woman who wants her dog cannot
the hypocrisy and dramatics from the homo’s is astounding.
the black community bring their boys up to be men not sissys and girlie men
no rights from then weer taken away as they could not marry the same sex anyway according to the constitution here in Florida they have never been allowed to marry and will not ever for sure now.bunch of drama queens crying and acting like a child because a law has been more secured.
no more activist judges etc now for them
I got a mail off the organiser in FL and they said that they think the people should not vote on the issue
they seem to forget we have laws and rules to go by .
people have died giving us a right to vote and they want to take my vote away because they don’t like the result
what do the Dems like to say at election time
ah yes
every vote must count
every black I know is insulted that they use their agenda to equate the black struggle and it is nothing of the same.
no one has took any rights away from homo’s and they need to get over this and stop acting like a spoilt child
I’m not in Ca but can you give me more detail on this please?
Did the upper class whites vote to have homo marriage?
was it the more working class who voted for prop 8?
thanks in advance
Did the upper class whites vote to have homo marriage? was it the more working class who voted for prop 8? thanks in advanceFrom this map it is clear the wealthier precincts voted down Prop. 8.
thanks for that
I have noticed that the rich in their white upper class areas are the ones who are liberal and shout how diversity and homosexuals are good and yet these Rich folk do not live in diverse areas like I have where it is more diverse.
liberal white utopia must be nice .
"Laws are made for the government of actions, and while they cannot interfere with mere religious belief and opinions, they may with practices. So here, as a law of the organization of society under the exclusive dominion of the United States, it is provided that plural marriages shall not be allowed. Can a man excuse his practices to the contrary because of his religious belief? [98 U.S. 145, 167] To permit this would be to make the professed doctrines of religious belief superior to the law of the land, and in effect to permit every citizen to become a law unto himself..." (see also: United States v. The Late Corp. of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.)
How ironic for these homsexual cultists who want separation of church and state, that the court case they want to base their argument upon was used against the LDS church to justify the statutory regulation of marriage in the United States!
It was the blacks and Latinos who passed Prop 8. If whites in California were the only voters, Prop 8 would have failed.
