Masked thieves steal 40 guns from Bargain Barn
Atlanta Journal and Constitution ^ | Thursday, November 13, 2008 | NANCY BADERTSCHER

The federal ATF and Jasper police are offering a $5,000 reward after the weekend break-in at a popular sporting goods store and the theft of 40 guns.

A video surveillance camera caught three masked men smashing display cases at the Bargain Barn in Jasper early Saturday and, in less than two minutes, escaping with 34 semi-automatic pistols and six rifles.

The value of the guns was not immediately disclosed.

“Right now, we’re in the early stages of the investigation,” Marc Jackson, spokesman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said Thursday afternoon.

Jasper Police Chief Harold Cantrell said the public’s help is needed.

“We need to prevent these stolen firearms from falling into the hands of felons, gang members and juveniles before violent crime and tragedy results.”

The ATF operates a toll-free, 24-hour hotline at 1-888-ATF-TIPS (1-888-283-8477).

Anyone with information also can contact Jasper Police Detective Gleason at 404-317-2532. Callers can remain anonymous.

Maybe not -

maybe just some folks that can’t afford to buy the necessary protection they’ll need shortly.

Those are the “law abiding” innocent people who will be armed when they take away our guns.

The guns already done did just that the casual observer would think.

Hopefully these guys will watch a few Steven Segal movies to learn how to shoot. That’ll make them easy targets.

Fixed it:

Those are the “law abiding” innocent people who will be armed when they take away our registered guns.

Much better...

I imagine we might see more of this...and then using it as an excuse to close or further restrict gun stores.

(/tinfoil hat moment) Pretty easy to manufacture too.

More from the local Pickens County Progress:
Jasper Police Chief Harold Cantrell said it was basically a “smash and grab, big time,” but investigators suspect it was committed by an organized gang specializing in firearm theft.

Bargain Barn Owner Jerry Stover said the value of the stolen weapons was $28,500. Cantrell said Monday investigators with the Jasper Police are working with the state crime lab and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on the robbery that may be connected with similar crimes elsewhere in Georgia.

Cantrell said the robbery of the well-known outdoors store is the northernmost of gang-style firearms robberies occurring in the state. But the size of the Bargain Barn might have made Jasper’s largest retailer an especially tempting target, Cantrell indicated. “It was a well-organized smash and grab,” he said. “I doubt seriously that local people will be found to have been involved.”

They can turn them in at a police buy-back and get $100/gun, or $4000, no questions asked. Usually, the cops don’t even check the serial numbers, so the real owners don’t even get their stolen property back. I suspect a lot of stolen guns end up this way.

Not to criticize, but if I owned a gun store, the place would be like an impenetrable vault.

B&B Sales in Westminster CA used to be like what I have in mind: A double-solid reinforced cinder block windowless cube of concrete surrounded by another wall topped with concertina wire. Felt like Fort Knox in there when the armored door slammed behind you and sealed you in as if you were in a pharaoh's tomb.

I've never liked gun shops that operate out of strip malls and leave their guns in display cases overnight where it wouldn't take much effort at all to sneak in through the ceiling from the Subway sandwich shop next door or just ram a stolen car through the back wall.

well, with economy being what it is, they couldn’t steal at full retail.

Are they presuming that the suspects are armed?
