Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign slogan, "the audacity of hope," should have instead been "the audacity of deceit." After months of telling the American people that he supports the Second Amendment, and only hours after being declared the president-elect, the Obama transition team website announced an agenda taken straight from the anti-gun lobby--four initiatives designed to ban guns and drive law-abiding firearm manufacturers and dealers out of business:
"Making the expired federal assault weapons ban permanent." Perhaps no other firearm issue has been more dishonestly portrayed by gun prohibitionists. Notwithstanding their predictions that the ban's expiration in 2004 would bring about the end of civilization, for the last four years the nation's murder rate has been lower than anytime since the mid-1960s. Studies for Congress, the Congressional Research Service, the National Institute of Justice, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found no evidence that gun prohibition or gun control reduces crime. Guns that were affected by the ban are used in only a tiny fraction of violent crime-about 35 times as many people are murdered without any sort of firearm (knives, bare hands, etc.), as with "assault weapons." Obama says that "assault weapons" are machine guns that "belong on foreign battlefields," but that is a lie; the guns are only semi-automatic, and they are not used by a military force anywhere on the planet.
"Repeal the Tiahrt Amendment." The amendment--endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police--prohibits the release of federal firearm tracing information to anyone other than a law enforcement agency conducting a bona fide criminal investigation. Anti-gun activists oppose the restriction, because it prevents them from obtaining tracing information and using it in frivolous lawsuits against law-abiding firearm manufacturers. Their lawsuits seek to obtain huge financial judgments . . .

There is a easy pay plan for lifetime membership at the NRA site. You pay $25 now, and each quarter until you hit the $1000.00 lifetime member fee.
Every one of us should do this now.
While Constitutionally, I feel you are correct, these people have no intent of going by the Constitution, only forcing their agendae around it. They view it as an obstacle to be overcome, not a valid and just limitation of governmental power.
Anyone ever read the story about hunting aliens with a homemade device and shotgun shells?
I’ve gotta read that again. Imagine if aliens did come to get us...
The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

The NRA putting the spot light on it must have been too much for them. The Rats are running for cover.

I believe that all 4473's are given to ATF when a dealer gets out of the busuness. That would have been about 75% of them in Clinton's day...many more will follow if taxes on firearms, fees to maintain FFL's, make stayng in busuness more difficult.
Nice photo. Did you see Meet the Press this morning? Brokejaw was interviewing Obama’s #2 on the transition team. She said something to the effect that “...when Obama begins to rule...” Kinda creepy.
Anyone who hasn't prepared yet, had better do it now...just be ready to pay an arm and a leg.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Not only is it easy for ATF to break the law, they already have. The ATF is known to have ignored the part of the law that says that they have to delete the information after 24 hours. They have kept ALL of the NICS check data - in fact, IIRC, the Republican Congress cut their funds because of this. That didn’t make the ATF stop, of course.
My point is that they *know* you have at least one gun, or have reason to believe you do, as it sounds like you have a C&R FFL. No point in not continuing with the permit process.
Yup.
And high speed document scanners have been around for quite a while now.
It would be a huge task to have all of the 4473s put in a database so that they can be searched. It can be done; the government will have access to all our money.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I have moved twice since I purchased my last firearm from a licensed dealer. I moved once from another state and the other time I did not give my new address to the Postal Service. My local government does not know if I own a firearm.
A single firearm can be traced, but it takes legwork involving sending an agent to the retailer who sold the firearm so that the 4473s can be examined. What Obama wants is a computer database so that by using the firearm’s serial number and manufacturer, the retail purchaser can be immediately identified plus having instant access to that person’s purchase history. That is what Tiahrt Amendment prohibits and we should fight its repeal tooth and nail. The ability to abuse a government database is easy, just ask ole Joe da Plumber.
A scanned 4473, written by hand, is just a picture, jpeg, bitmap, or tiff; it cannot be searched. Database entry is a manual operation.
Um.... They’ve had good handwriting recognition via OCR for over a decade now; acceptable recognition for almost 20 years. How do you think the IRS processes handwritten tax forms these days? I had a short term contract in an IRS processing center six years ago and even then the OCR was usually good enough to read 95% of handwritten returns.
The last page of a dealer’s 4473 book I looked at I could not read. Does this software recognize cursive writing?
Bless you, FRiend- it's money well spent.
Six years ago, it could, with ease. Remember, the big problem for OCR has been the available processing power and that hasn’t been a problem for a while. You can avoid it with clever algorithms, but you can brute force it with more power.
Heck, in 1996, Apple had a commercial PDA that could read cursive writing - specifically mine, which humans have problems reading. The government had a “brute force” solution long before that.
