Breaking News: Obama wins electoral vote in Nebraska

BY ROBYNN TYSVER

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Barack Obama made history today in Nebraska.

Barack Obama The Democratic presidential candidate claimed an electoral vote in the Omaha-based 2nd Congressional District — the first time in more than four decades a Democrat won any of Nebraska’s electoral votes.

The Omaha World-Herald is calling the race after Obama won 8,434 out of 15,039 early votes that arrived too late to be included in Tuesday’s results. They were counted today by Douglas County election officials.

Those ballots give Obama a 1,260-vote lead over Republican John McCain in the 2nd District.

It also added one more electoral vote to Obama’s win over McCain in Tuesday’s election. The electoral count now stands: Obama, 365, McCain, 162.

Only Missouri’s 11 electoral votes remain up in the air.

"We always knew we could do it, but it would be an uphill climb. It’s great to see a little corner of Nebraska turn blue," said John Berge, state director for Obama’s campaign. He said the win was a testament to all the work done by Obama staffers and volunteers.

Nebraska was one of the last states whose presidential race was in question after Tuesday’s election. The other state left to be called is Missouri.

Obama won only one of Nebraska’s five electoral votes. The other four went to McCain.

This is the first time since 1964 that a Nebraska electoral vote has gone to a Democrat. The state has been reliably Republican since Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson in his landslide victory over Barry Goldwater.

Obama aggressively ignored Nebraska’s red hue this year, as he sent 16 paid staffers and opened three offices in Omaha. It was part of his strategy to expand the electoral map, and to fight for votes in traditional GOP strongholds.

A 1991 state law allowed Obama to concentrate his efforts on the Omaha metropolitan area, where Democrats outnumber Republicans.

Nebraska and Maine are the only two states in the nation that split its electoral votes based on congressional district. All the other states award their electoral votes on a winner-take-all system.

Nebraska is the first of the two to split its electoral votes.

Conservative.org is a good place to start.

Tom Coburn’s fiscal policy.

Jim Inhofe’s energy and environmental policy.

Jeff Session’s judicial philosophy.

Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindal’s as deliverers of those messages.

An outlook that tells the American people THEY ARE CAPABLE OF WHATEVER THEY DREAM.

Frankly, I didn’t hear that from Hussein OR McCain in this campaign....

The nuts have filed plenty of voter registrations which are votes for that ONE . I do not expect MO to get 'left behind'.

I am curious as to how the electoral college would look if ALL STATES distributed their votes by congressional district, with the statewide winner getting the “2” votes for the Senators.

At least we’re rid of Hagel

Not if he can ki$$@ss sufficient to get a spot with Obama now. When everything else fell through that was his intent.
There was a noticeable change in Hagel’s publicity stunts once he announced he was not running again- he just changed goals once he figured out how the Huskers felt about him.

My you do paint a wide brush as you thank Nebraska. Tell me how did you manage to live in a state where not one single solitary soul voted for the immature con man?

Do note it was a split vote, one of five. Get enough money behind you and anything can be bought if it does not take the whole cake to do it.

We complemented this possibility, and like all others, we summarily dismissed it, particularly me.

However, I believe we are in for some interesting times.

We were told blacks were going to riot if Obama lost yet already true conservatives are becoming increasingly morally apathetic towards Obama after only 72 hours and already there seems to be some hints of buyers remorse among those in the middle who supported him.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens once the inner city blacks realize that Uncle Barry won’t pay their car payments and mortgages. All of this going on while we are fighting two wars, an economic downturn, the re rise of Imperial Russia, North Korea, China, and the fast approaching judgment day in Iran.

It’s almost like a Tom Clacey novel except TC always assumed that people who were the backbone of this country would come to its rescue. And like those Republicans who stayed home on Tuesday, people might just sit the next one out.

McCain Says His Support Of Embryonic Stem Cell Research Is Unchanged: Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, on Thursday while campaigning in Florida said he continues to support human embryonic stem cell research, the Washington Post reports. When asked whether recent advances in nonembryonic stem cell research would change his stance, McCain replied, "I have not changed my position yet" (Milbank, Washington Post, 1/25).

Just wait...we already know we’re screwed...those that voted for him will soon know they are screwed. It’s been prophecied we’ll have a complete ecomonic collaspe under this man and this donkey controlled house and senate. The Republicans will not be around to be blamed...ha ha...I hope the republicans are smart enough to just sit back and let it rip.

Perdogg, I find this part of your post most interesting. I don't quite understand the "increasingly apathetic" part or the buyers remorse hints. Can you expound on that a little more?

I can say this: a very very liberal friend of mine, whom I thought would be all in my face about the results, was very very somber after the election. He did seem to realize that he got what he wanted...now maybe he'd have to see him "deliver". But whatever it was, he wasn't walking cocky--he was definitely in a serious mood. I was even surprised to hear him say we needed to "pray" for Obama...that is a phrase I don't think I've ever heard him use.

There was story about Michelle Obama’s designer dress where a woman from Wisconsin, who voted for Bambi, seem to have a light bulb off in her head upon seeing her in it. Also there was a caller on Austin Hill’s radio show that I missed, but was recounted by another caller that the caller was already done with Obama.

I actually gave Gov Bill Clinton a chance (didn’t vote for him), until I was told that Gov Clinton economic cure endorsed by three Nobel prize economist was not really THE economic plan but instead he had to have an economic summit to come up with one. Ironically Obama’s plan sounds just like it.

I am not optimistic about America in next 18 months.

50% of the people polled in October thought the Republicans still controlled the Congress.

....Thanks Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio, Florida, NC, CO and VA for dumping your American roots and growing new socialist weeds in the yard.....etc.....
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
My County in VA voted 57-43 McCain/Palin with about a 75% turnout.
The interesting point is going to be about Jan 22 when the masses realize IT AIN’T GONNA BE A ‘FREE RIDE’ and turn on the “ONE”.
I guess CHANGE really means Clinton 3 BUT the only other place he is going to find ‘experienced’ D help is from the Carter administration and we all know how well that went.
With the Illinois ‘goon squad’ in place it will be reminiscent of Carters GA Mafia....
After another ‘incident’ by some of JC’s hand picked staff, JC (supposedly) asked a question of a long time DC pol—what should I do about Jody (Powell) and Hamilton (Jordan) the wag said — the first thing I would do is ship their sorry a$$es back to Ga and get some adults up here—

Adds to the UGH factor of this election.

Obama targeted this EV and he did better wherever he spent his VAST resources, proving his election was about marketing, not any radical voter shifts. Obamaites picked up a couple state senate seats and I assume that 1 crazy t-shirt wearing Marxist senator won reelection.

All this time we were waiting for a Republican to win a Maine EV.

The good news in Nebraska, the GOP congressman in this seat ran ahead of McCain and won, and the US Senate seat was picked up by the GOP from the Rino slugde party.

This is rather appalling. Obama won Omaha by a very narrow margin. It looks like he’ll win the electoral vote by 365 to 173.

“The good news in Nebraska, the GOP congressman in this seat ran ahead of McCain and won”

That’s not entirely good news. Lee Terry won by only 52% to 48%. And he’s a RINO weasel who’s not strong on keeping his word. I sincerely hope he’s defeated in a primary.
