Ronald Reagan is one of the greatest Presidents in history, but I now realize nobody is perfect. There is no way he could have foreseen or even imagined that his first and most important decision would sow the seeds of Marxism in America.

When Lewis Powell stepped down from the Supreme Court, Ronald Reagan should have FIRST selected Robert Bork to replace Powell while the Republicans still controlled the Senate.
Once the Democrats took the Senate it was too late for Bork because the Democrats violated all truth and principle to destroy a most qualified selection in Bork.
Instead he wasted the opportunity by selecting Sandra Day O'Connor, which he did in part to throw a bone to the "forced diversity" cult.
Even the great Reagan fell prey to the nonstop drumbeat of political correctness and the politics of forced 'diversity'.

For some reason, when it comes to the Gipper’s biggest mistake, not getting Nancy to abort Skipper comes to mind...but no, that would have been wrong.

His biggest mistake was stating the intention to take as many people off of the income tax rolls as possible. This backfired spectacularly, as instead of freeing entrepreneurs from crushing tax burdens it has created a large and growing caste of moochers who have no intention of ever becoming productive enough to pay their own way. When they hit 50%, it's lights out for America - and we may be there now. If we are going to have an income tax at all, then everybody should pay - down to the first dollar earned.
Reagan was also one of the first to advance the disastrous idea that home ownership would magically turn minorities into conservative voters.
The good he did greatly outweighed the bad, but Reagan was certainly not the pristine economic conservative he is imagined to be on FR.

One interesting side to the Robert Bork story you don't hear very much is that back when he was appointed there were a number of
Republicans who were happy to see his nomination destroyed by the Democrats.
A lot of these Republicans never forgave him for the role he played as Richard Nixon's "hatchet-man."

thought this thread might be about Ron Jr. I started to laugh at this, but the more I think about it; the harder it gets to form an argument against it....

I was in the gallery at the convention when Reagan announced his choice of Bush. As soon as he said "George Bush," the rest of his statement was drowned out by wild cheering. However, I wasn't among those cheering. I figured that should Reagan win the election, Bush would be in a position to succeed him and then undo whatever he had accomplished.
Reagan should have chosen Paul Laxalt as his VP.

The Rockefeller group supposedly told Reagan in Detroit he would not be President if he didn't pick Bush. According to Michael Reagan, this is untrue. He once said on his radio show that he was present when Ronald Reagan made the decision to tap Bush for the VP slot, and that nothing of the sort happened.

While we are pointing out President Reagan’s mistakes, I’ll add the Earned Income Tax Credit. It may have started as a noble way to help honest, hard working people, it has become just another big government giveaway program.
I prepared taxes for four years and you’d be surprised how many of our fellow “citizens” knew exactly how much they needed to report to collect the maximum EITC. It’s on a bell curve.
Oh yeah, the were also the largest purchaser’s of the “instant money loans.”

McCain and Bush are both cut from the same "moderate" cloth.
A sieve for a border, "swimmer" Kennedy education bill, massive spending, the attempted Harris to the USSC appointment, building a legacy for Clinton with his Sunami and Katrina initiative with his Father and...lets not forget Ramos and Campion... etc etc
Do you want to puke now?

It’s pitiful!!
McCain couldn’t win - the guy is such a whiner ... he’s a true American hero and he should stay a senator ...
If if wasn’t for Sarah I would have sat out this election. She brought spunk to his campaign and now that he lost they have to look for reasons so they dump on Sarah???!!!!
I am no longer a Republican. I’m going Independent. They will have to show me why I should give them my vote.
Maybe this is a good thing ... the Republican party needs to be totally dismantled and rebuilt with young blood and young ideas .... not with grumpy old men ....

Bob, the American people are solely responsible for adopting Marxism. Hell, even at the Free Republic there are long-time members who post here that are suspicious of capitalism, spew class warfare, disdain free trade, disdain free markets, disdain all things/people foreign. Many times, these biases cause these people to advocate for more government.

You list the problems you have with Bush. You haven’t mentioned his successes.
Nearly 8 years of a growing economy
Record unemployment
lower taxes
defense of America
originalist scotus justices
support for traditional marriage
strong support for life
