Brought home my new AR-15 yesterday. For those who don't know what that is, the AR-15 is the civilian model of the M-16 rifle. It is what one would call an assault gun. I am in my fifties, a hunter who has always had hunting rifles and shotguns. A man who has always got a sense of pride of ownership for his guns. Cherishing the thought of passing my collection on to my children.
This is different, there is no joy. In fact, I felt sadness as I drove home with my new possession. You see, I purchased this weapon as a safety precaution. Not from home invasion by criminals, not from looters, but from a possible civil war that I fear may be close to being unavoidable.
Our nation is on the precipice of falling into the darkness of socialism, not the friendly European kind, but the Nazi like type Germany experienced in the thirties. The fascist socialism that has been so cruel in history. The kind that takes from all but their favored. The kind that does not tolerate opposition and indeed crushes it. The kind that we all know inside is driven by evil rather than good.
So, bringing this gun home was a sad day, a day I would rather not remember. And, after familiarizing myself with this new weapon and becoming proficient in it's use I intend on putting it away and hope to forget about it.
But, should the day come when I need to remember, I will be prepared.

Gun owners worried
PHOENIX — Steve Saridakis, a Valley gun dealer put it like this.
“it’s scary. I’ve had nightmares about this guy.”
Obama says he does support the second amendment and a person’s right to bear arms.
But in the past he has supported bans on semi-automatic weapons and on concealed weapons.
It’s enough to make gun owners nervous.
Ron Bilodeau says “not so much fear, just major concerns.”
Kirk Optepeke agrees, “they just talk about if Obama wins, some of our second amendment rights will be taken away from us.”
And as a result gun shops across the country are seeing a spike in sales.
Nationwide, gun sales are up around 10 percent.
Dealers say some buyers fear a bad economy will lead to more robberies - and are buying guns for self defense.
But most we talked to say a possible Obama administration is driving sales.
“Specifically the assault rifles they think are gonna be banned,” Saridakis says.
Obama doesn’t own a gun. Mccain doesn’t either, and he supports background checks at gun shows so gun owners say he’s not the ideal candidate either.
Saridakis says “he’s not a gun guy, but his vice president is.”
Sad days indeed. "Sic vis Pacem. Para bellum..." The cure of having to Fight for a full restoration of the promise of freedom laid out in the Constitution is no where near as horrible as the disease currently killing our way of life.
Wonder how it would work to make a rifled barrel for a 12, and shoot slugs? Would it shoot further?
The problems that arise with the Garand fill a book. My shop manual for the Garand must be three hundred pages.
The shop manual I have for the AR usually covers the problem with the front sight getting loose. A set screw from the bottom solves that. The rest of the book covers complete disassembly and reloading.
I have more Garands than I have AR’s. The Garand is a nice museum piece that is fun but horribly expensive to shoot. It’s close to impossible to mount a scope. The rear sight eventually wears. The operating rod will bend after time. The gas tube loosens on the barrel. The bullet guide bends and prematurely ejects the clip. They don’t hold their accuracy after time.
Have fun with your Garand but it’s time has passed.

well I don’t own one. it was just a question out of curiosity.

You would need to buy a full auto sear which is classified as a machine gun by law. You would have to go through the same background investigation required for buying a machine gun. You would also have to pay the $200 tax stamp and wait however long it takes (90-120 days) to clear you. All BATFE regulations would then apply to your AR15 that apply to machine guns. And then you could pick up your full auto sear... BUT NONE OF THIS MATTERS BECAUSE YOU CANNOT USE IT TO “MAKE” A NEW MACHINE GUN DUE TO THE 1986 BAN ON MANUFACTURE OF NEW MACHINE GUNS.
Sure, almost any semiauto can. But even having the parts to do it is federal PMITA prison time.
I didn't think that 5.56 was a good round for zombie elimination. My personal preference is 7.62 x 54R. ;-)

I can convert our espresso machine to fire full auto out of the milk frother if I had a quarter million dollar CNC milling machine and the SolidWorks skills to utilize it.
I wouldn't do it unless I was an ATF-licensed C7/SOT manufacturer, though.
Yes, an AR can be converted to fire full auto. However, the BATFE and firearms manufacturers work together to ensure that the process is complicated and well beyond the skills of the average Joe.
The penalty for constructive possession of unlicensed machineguns is life ruiningly harsh, by the way.

I would not call that grip “user friendly”. What is is like to actually use it? Mine has the standard pistol grip.
