Brought Home My AR-15
11-1-08 | Vanity

Posted on 11/01/2008 4:16:33 AM PDT by Wpin

Brought home my new AR-15 yesterday. For those who don't know what that is, the AR-15 is the civilian model of the M-16 rifle. It is what one would call an assault gun. I am in my fifties, a hunter who has always had hunting rifles and shotguns. A man who has always got a sense of pride of ownership for his guns. Cherishing the thought of passing my collection on to my children.

This is different, there is no joy. In fact, I felt sadness as I drove home with my new possession. You see, I purchased this weapon as a safety precaution. Not from home invasion by criminals, not from looters, but from a possible civil war that I fear may be close to being unavoidable.

Our nation is on the precipice of falling into the darkness of socialism, not the friendly European kind, but the Nazi like type Germany experienced in the thirties. The fascist socialism that has been so cruel in history. The kind that takes from all but their favored. The kind that does not tolerate opposition and indeed crushes it. The kind that we all know inside is driven by evil rather than good.

So, bringing this gun home was a sad day, a day I would rather not remember. And, after familiarizing myself with this new weapon and becoming proficient in it's use I intend on putting it away and hope to forget about it.

But, should the day come when I need to remember, I will be prepared.

Well I went to get mags for my Mini14 and was in a hurry and the salesman grabbed a couple off the shelf.

Got home and they fit the .308 rounds I had very nicely.

But they were mags for an M14 .308, not a mini14 .223
So they went back!

A buddy of mine has an HK91 for sale, I dunno, I don’t think so, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I pick that thing up.

Well, I don't believe it will come to that, and I have heard enough of the Left’s predictions that it will. But in case I'm wrong, buy plenty of ammo too.

Sage advice... less wasted ammo and more holes in bad guys... especially if things get up close and personal.

mew M-14 mags (made by Checkmate Industries for Armalite) will fit the AR-10 and M1/M14(.308/7.62).

The AR-15 is a .223/5.56 caliber rifle.

For the AR-15 I’d look at stocking up on Magpul P-Mags. Probably the best AR-15 magazine ever designed and cheap at $15 per mag. Get a few while you can.

I understand your feelings completely and relate to them.

What American would relish taking up arms against his own countrymen?

On the other hand, the sober assessment of the situation before us demands being prepared to defend yourself and your family should the situation get out of hand.

We are living in times of extreme dishonesty, deceit and provocation. We see daily threats to our basic liberty right in front of our faces.

Prudent men prepare but pray they do not have to use deadly force. You sound like such a prudent man.

Our American founders knew we later generations could be faced with these threats and made sure we had the Second Amendment should ever-present, lurking tyrants rise before us to steal our liberty.

I bought an AR-15 from a gun shop in 1985.

Man, what a great weapon. I spent many hours shooting up cinder blocks and the like.

And accurate — a friend of mine had never touched a rifle in life was able to pick off a beer can at almost 200 yards after a few practice shots.

Alas, the ammo was so expensive and the AR-15 so much more than I needed I ended up selling it to a friend a few months later.

Nice rifle, though.

Like most gun owners, I believe insurance is a good idea. For years I've joked that if the US ever defaults on a debt issue, all the gold in the world won't matter because the only commodity worth anything will be bullets.

But with that said, I think the chance of your worst nightmare occurring are small. Even if Obama wins and there is a Democrat super majority in congress, they will still be modestly constrained by public opinion. This is literally why we have the second amendment... because if we have 91 million homes with rifles in them, we'll probably never have to actually use them.

It won't save us from the kind of lawful damage that can be done like the loss of a rational supreme court for a generation or two, or confiscatory tax rates. But it will keep him from doing anything super-constitutional. Because he knows, and if he doesn't' he will be advised, that if someone really wants to kill him, and is willing to die to do it, they probably can.

At the end of the day that threat of violence is a constraint on the behavior of our politicians. Were it not for that, we'd have have a totalitarian system put in place already. But the fear of some crazy person's bullet keeps them from getting too out of line.

I agree with you that this is as close as we've ever been to the onset of totalitarian tyranny, but even with THESE Democrats in charge I still think the odds of it going that way are thankfully small.

Of course that's easy to say with 3,000 rounds in the bottom of my safe.

And just to be perfectly clear for those Democrat operatives that may be trolling, I'm not advocating violence at all, just describing the effect of knowledge on the behavior of our elected officials. I don't propose it as a solution to political problems, I only describe it's effect so others will know that violence is unlikely to be necessary, whatever the circumstances.

correct me if I am wrong. can the AR15 be converted to full auto?

You be wrong ... You would need a machine shop. If you had a machine shop, and the skills to use it, you could make whatever you want. It's how it is. Liberals see things that come off shelves in plastic packages, conservatives see things that you design and build.

Full auto is so over rated, even the military is now locking their rifles at three shot bursts, to overcome the inadequacy of the chosen 556 cartridge. Civilians know that a 12 gauge with 00 magnum buck shot is much much more effective ... That's why they were called 'trench brooms' and 'riot guns' for the longest time. The military must also know, the Bernelle M4 is their new combat entry shotgun, costs $1400, easily approximated by civilians with a $350 Remington 870 pump 12 from Walmart.

Real moose hunters use M1 Garands or M1As ... OK I will skip the cartridge wars, let's just say the AR-15 is much better than no gun at all.

Civilian militia types are much better at sniping with a deer rifle than attacking a large force -- Iraq taught many lessons. ^_^

Not legally, but if this country goes for Obama and gives the RATs a supermajority, I may have to re-think my "respect" for the law.

Like other folks have said though, full auto is over rated. You'd be better off improving your marksmanship and choosing your targets wisely.

"It is what one would call an assault gun."

It is not as assault rifle, unless it has selective fire capability.

Selective fire is the ability to switch between semi-automatic and automatic (or burst fire) by means of a selector switch.

Unless you have an NFA registered rifle, I presume you are the owner of an AR-15 that only has the ability to fire in semi-automatic mode. In this case, it is most certainly not an assault rifle.

M14 is 7.62x51, SKS is 7.62X39. A M14 mag is straight and must be “rocked in” a SKS or AK47 mag is curved and shorter than M14, fires a short, stubby round.

Mags are available everywhere online, cheap. They are probably legal to own everywhere, if you can own the gun, the mag is probably no problem.

to the editors: is there some reason that my comments are not being posted? I don’t believe that my comments were profane, or rasist, and I certainly didn’t attack anyone. Just wondering why my opinions haven’t been posted for several days now. Am I banned or something?

FWIW, the stock SKS uses stripper clips. Even the larger permanent aftermarket magazines that can be attached are loaded up with stripper clips. Respectfully submitted.

I’ve got a couple of those, but I like the mags better. Someone just sent me a link to an aftermarket mag, and you have to modify the wooden stock a little to make it work. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/49765

Mine’s Chinese. I might give it a go. There’s probably a how-to video on Youtube for the modification.
