Your humble correspondent had figured the polls would start to narrow in the final week of the campaign but this stunning new Gallup poll shows the lead in the Presidential race narrowing much more rapidly than he had assumed. The latest Gallup poll of traditional likely voters shows the race has narrowed down to 49 percent for Barack Obama and 47 percent for John McCain. Here is Gallup's explanation of this poll:
Gallup's "traditional" likely voter model, which Gallup has employed for past elections, factors in prior voting behavior as well as current voting intention. This has generally shown a closer contest, reflecting the fact that Republicans have typically been more likely to vote than Democrats in previous elections.
Meanwhile, over at the Daily Kos, some have nervously pooh-poohed this poll but others are starting to hit the panic button. Here is a sampling of Kossacks sweating buckets with some commentary by your humble correspondent:

When McCain rallies, the market goes up--hence, the 900 point gain today!
My prediction, Kos gals will be fantasizing soon about razor blades!
Holy Bat Shiite, Batman!............
The Kos Kids sound like we did last week!
What a delight it will be to see Axelrod eat his words.:)
One of the signs I post at busy intersections says “Obama is too radical.”
If you live in a swing state, print this sign, on your own computer, and make copies. 50 copies for 5 bucks at Kinko’s. Tens of thousands pass through busy intersections everyday.
Or black people. There's a lot of disfunction in that community that O is going to have to overcome to get out a super high percentage of them to the polls.
I am pleased about the news, but honestly its about the state by state contests. National pulse is one thing, but we have the electoral college. So we would need to know if Nevada, Colorado, Ohio and other states would be moving our way.
Note to self: Don’t forget to lurk at DU and Kos Tuesday next.
Let’s see if this surge in the polls makes it onto the nightly or morning news of the Dinosaurs.
You need to get out more if you think the yutes won't show more for O than they did for Kerry.
“He is on defense and has been for about a week.”
I look at faces during telecasts of their rallies.
Obama and Biden look mean - furrowed brows, frowning, eyes scowling ...
Sarah and McCain smile - show white teeth and laugh. Eyes sparkle.
Not scientific, just my observation.
The KOSsuckers know that as well -
they know that the polls are way overweighted in 0bama’s favor,
and with it this close, they know they’re gonna lose it.
That’s something I’ve found interesting about some of the Hillary sites.
They don’t understand why conservatives aren’t foaming at the mouth over the polls, media coverage, etc. I don’t think they yet understand this is politics as usual from our perspective. :\
What, these DUmbos don’t even understand how their own pollsters work? This is the “make the race close so we don’t look like inaccurate pollsters” phase and the “make the race close so the dem voters still think they need to vote” phase. It was preceded by the “make the lead 15 points so everyone says it’s over, McCain is dead” phase.
These guys will be marching next Wednesday:

I noticed that too. Obama looks mad as a wet hornet.
