would anyone be able to speculate as to why this would have happened yesterday or today?

My guess is that it's all manufactured. They are trying to run a "deadman's campaign" without actually killing off the candidates.
i.e. "Shame on McCain for continuing to actually campaign while O'Biden are off the trail. Poor Bama is hiding out in Hawaii tending his sick grandmother."
Ashcroft lost the senate seat in Missouri because he wouldn't campaign against a deadman (Carnahan(sp)). Norm Coleman nearly lost in Minnesota for the same reason against Wellstone.
