Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's scheduled trip to Madison on Thursday might be derailed.
Obama's campus-area campaign office said workers there have heard the visit was "in flux" and were awaiting further word. The much-anticipated visit would have been the first for the Illinois senator to Madison since winning Wisconsin's primary in February.
City workers, however, said they were told the visit would be canceled. Laura Whitmore, community relations manager for the Parks Department, said an organizer left a message with employee Kelli Lamberty, who issues street-use permits for the Capitol, saying the permit requested Friday would no longer be needed.
The campaign has been gearing up for the event, asking for volunteers to staff it.
It had been planned for Thursday at noon at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Main Street near the Capitol.
Four years ago, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's rally with rocker Bruce Springsteen near the state Capitol drew a crowd of 80,000. Obama supporters were hoping for another huge turnout in the run-up to the Nov. 4 election, now only 15 days away.

I am sure they would love to hear from him in the middle of hunting season, on their gun rights.
He’ll take Dane & Milwaukee counties, but unless they cheat, he won’t take the whole state. 10 EC votes is nothing to sneeze at, and McCain/Palin have been here a number of times this season to huge turn-outs.
We only lost WI to Kerry in 2004 by less than 12K votes. Same with Algore in 2000.
Milwaukee & Dane county bear watching for voter fraud, but the fox is guarding the hen house in our state. :(

Wisconsin. MMmmm. Maybe McCain should show up instead! Not in Madison, of course. But Green Bay? Milwaukee? Wearing a large cheese, of course.
