Poll: Obama leads in 3 of 4 key Bush counties
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14556.html ^

Barack Obama has erased traditional Republican advantages in four key bellwether counties that President George W. Bush won in 2000 and 2004, according to a new Politico/InsiderAdvantage survey. Each county is critical to the outcome in the battleground state where it is located.

In Reno, Nevada's Washoe County, Obama leads McCain by a 46-45 percent margin, with six percent undecided. Obama posts a wider 50-44 percent lead with five percent undecided in Raleigh, North Carolina's Wake County, and another 6-point lead in Hillsborough County, Fla., where Tampa is located. There, he edges McCain 47-41 percent, with 11 percent undecided.

Among the four counties tested, McCain leads in only one: Jefferson County, Colo., a populous Denver suburb. McCain is ahead there by a margin of 45-43 percent, with eight percent undecided.

At first glance, these Politico/InsiderAdvantage numbers might not look so troubling for McCain, who trailed Obama by 10 points in an ABC/Washington Post national survey, released Monday.

But these four counties are crucial battlegrounds in four of the most competitive states in the presidential race. In recent years, the Republican path to the White House has run through these areas.

In 2004, President Bush won Washoe County, Nevada's second-most populous county, by a four-point margin over Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kerry. This year, when Obama is expected to run up a big vote lead in Las Vegas' Clark County, McCain is unlikely to be able to afford a loss in Washoe.

"Watching a PBS documentary last night about Nixon. He was trailing Humphrey in the polls in the week before the election in 1968 and the rest is history."

In fact just one week later Nixon beat Humphrey by 20 points.

Time after time proof is offered that the media lies and their polls are wrong. But the right wing fools believe every word the media tells them.

It is no wonder that the MSM thinks the right wing is made up of easily fooled idiots.

I have a feeling history is repeating itself as it usually does time and again

I pray you're correct.

I am wondering if the “polls” are factoring in fraud. (ala Ohio and kerry)

Most voters get their information of the dinosaur networks and from CNN and MSNBC combined.

Rush Limbaugh is the only true conservative news source but he is only three hours, and on the radio.

Most people are not FR literate.

You're thinking of McGovern in 1972. Nixon barely edged Humphrey in 1968.

right I ma happy you wrote that

I am in north Florida, st Augustine to be exact and I know of only one person who wants obama, just one.

The support for McCain is overwhelmingly for McCain and now you say this in Tampa.

So we have your area, for McCain, we certainly have the north east and north west except maybe the west and north side of Jacksonville but that is not surprise as they are voting based on color.

At the end of I4 is for McCain from what I know off the people there I know.

the south west will be close but the demographics go for McCain.

So when they do these polls where exactly are they polling

No way can I see FL, VA or NC go for Obama, I just cant see it.

You look at the Gallup poll and where on earth do they get their results from?
I mean 10 point lead so I can only assume they are polling Dem areas like MA,

Polls are great aren’t they? I was listening to Rush the other day when there was a discussion about the accuracy of polls and the fact that we wouldn’t even need to go out and vote. Just accept what the polls say.

A woman called in and suggested to Rush that everyone who is approached by any poll respond they are voting/voted for Obama. Rush loved the idea and continued joking about it for a long time. The fact that pollsters would be in the dark and would misreport the actual facts really pleased him. Many of his callers also loved the idea and joked about it with him. I say joked because we all know Rush wouldn’t want to do anything to make anyone think he was interfering with a presidential election.

I wonder what the numbers would say if the polls actually reflected the truth.

Ditto. I was just thinking that. Maybe I live on a different side of town, but I hardly ever see Obama signs or bumper stickers. Most people I talk to are voting for McCain (although, not everyone is doing so cheerfully).

How's that for anecdotal evidence?

just wrote about this as I ma in north Florida.

Even my mother in law who has voted for the Dems all their lives is now voting for Mccain my brother in law in MA is voting for McCain and said he hardly knows anyone voting for him in MA

these polls are being done in Dem areas or when they poll McCain voters are too busy to be polled.

For example
older people with experience are going for McCain they are the ones with kids or just don’t like using the phone where as young kids mostly with no experience, many never paid tax and still at school love their phones and don’t really have much to do but take polls

I was looking at what counts in presidential races ... the electoral college vote.

Nixon 55.9%
Humphrey 35.5%
Wallace 8.6%

As Al Gore found out the popular vote is not worth much. The campaigns poll for electoral vote. That is why they are always very accurate and the media polls are for popular vote and they are very inacurate.

Isaac Asimov took polling and sampling to its logical extreme in his short story “Franchise.” Worth reading, or you can get a short synopsis at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franchise_(short_story)

I wonder how many conservatives still have land lines? We use Vonage, Skype and cell phones. This would certainly affect polling.

No internals from a quick run through the site.

Malarkey and propaganda until proven otherwise.

And even then, still suspect.

(E.g. liberal Republicans and liberal Dems sampled?)

Cheers!

my wife and I have mobile phones and have done for years, totally no point in having two phone bills.

lets not forget many people are dealing with kids etc these people tend to vote for republicans or are more conservative in their minds even though they will be classed as independents
