Senator Elizabeth Dole, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, tells Newsmax TV she and other Republicans tried to move legislation five years ago to rein in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but Democrats blocked their efforts and it "infuriates" her to think about how that could have prevented what eventually happened.

Why the hell doesn't she "name names"?
Which Democrats?
Was it Dodd?
Was it Biden?
If she really wanted to help (and this is true of all Republicans) she should name names and that would include Barney Frank protecting his boyfriend in FM by blocking regulation in the House.
Not that it will happen, but...a slew of legislators should be indicted and tried.
"other things could have been done that are more market based..." - plus - "they added 150 billion $$ worth of sweetners"
If they really foresaw these problems, they should have been saying it again and again and again and again ad infinitim until the Dems publicly addressed it.
When the Democrats have an issue, they ALL get together and push it over and over. Eventually even the Right-wing press (newsmax for example) will write about it.
Yes, they have the media in their pockets, while the Republicans don't. But that's no excuse. They shouldn't hold one news conference and forget about it. They MUST be much more aggressive. And right now they should be pounding Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd every time they open their mouths. But they aren't. McCain mentioned 'em yesterday. Who's said it today? No one.
Well Liz, it infuriates me how you did not do your job selecting candidates in 2006. You lost many seats for the Republicans....but regardless I hope you win your seat. Unfortunately we need you.
We heard this kind of talk with goldwater and it ushered in LBJ’s “great society” when Republicans were slaughtered nationwide.
Thanks, but no thanks.
There lies the fundamental difference between Freepers and most everyone else. We expect more out of our elected officials than simple finger pointing. Democrats are mollified by words alone.
Liddy, you're a day late and a dollar short, but I do hope you win, if only to keep an (R) next to that Senate seat.
And its about time the country had one.”
I TOTALLY agree. We've been clinging to the carcass of Republicanism for way too long. We need a conservative party that can either rule or form majority coalitions so we can have an impact on legislation. This two party crap every four years is destroying our country.
If that doesn't work, I think states will begin to discuss disengaging from the union and looking for alternatives. When half of the country is hysterical about being ruled by the other half, its time to follow the lead of Czechoslovakia and come up with something that works.
Well....she deserves some credit if she voted against that monstrosity.
“If she really wanted to help (and this is true of all Republicans) she should name names and that would include Barney Frank protecting his boyfriend in FM by blocking regulation in the House.”
Why should we leave Frank’s buddy out of this?
Barney was behind him for years!!!
Regardless of what kind of “talk” you want to hear, we are in the already in the first stages of an expansion of governemnt that is making the Great Society look trivial by comparison.
When did she warn us little people about this? Or did she just bottle up all that infuriation and keep it to herself?
And Sen. Dole, how many times in the last 5 years were you shouting this from the rooftops?
Elizabeth Dole “Infuriated” but is still a RINO...
Behind him at the very least!!!!
Well gee Libby, where in the **** have you been??!?! You guys have been virtually INVISIBLE and not FIGHTING for us, but then again, neither is Sen. McCain, only Gov. Palin has been fighting but she’s only had access to all this for a few weeks, NOT YEARS like you guys have.
Senator Dole, you folks are pathetic, you’ve all let us down, you’ve betrayed our financial system by turning it all into an instant Socialist governement with this insane bailout.
Oh yeah, and “our maverick” was going to name names and “make them famous (infamous is a better term)” but he hasn’t until pressured by a Realtor at his townhall speech in Wisconsin I believe. I guess you guys are just going to let the country go to hell without a struggle really.
But we’re still here, the unwashed and we have OUR candidate, Gov. Palin, who we’ll fight for like she was our daughter (that is my generation at least), she’s left you all in the dust, too late, she’s already put you all to shame, hardly any politico has defender her while her and her family has been slimed, insulted and lied about time and again and you know why? ‘cause you’re SCARED of the big, bad meanie Libs.
What was her vote on the AIG bailout?
That bit of legislation gave PORK to ACORN to the tune of $500M a year!
Libby, we would have appreciated the infuriation a BIT earlier. Something in the water at the Dole house.
“What’s should be even more infuriating is that, those same democrats, including Obama, might just be some 3 weeks away from being put in charge of that economy, with even more power to completely destroy the free-market system in the U.S. and to make socialism the official economic system of the country.”
THINK ABOUT IT! Those same Democraps are blocking in the identical manner any approach by Republicans to reform Social Security and Medi Care as well. Those two entities could possibly collapse at the same time, or within a close proximity in time to one another. Either one on its own would make this boondoggle today seem like a cake walk.
The Socialist/Democrats have had their eye on Health Care for a long time, so I’m certain as long as they hold majorities, they’ll continue the “sandbag” approach to reform, and allow this to crash too so they can Nationalize Health Care.
It’s for the POWER. It’s for Socialism.
I think your post is right on the money, my first reaction when I hear statements like hers is “if it was so important, why didn’t you do something about it when your party was in the majority?” Politicians really must think everyone else is just plain stupid.
