Dow falls more than 600 points; markets in free-fall

The Dow Jones industrials fell under 9,000 this afternoon for the first time since the summer of 2003 as investor confidence that markets would stabilize appeared to collapse. At 3:40 p.m. ET, the blue chips were down 641 points, or 6.9%, to 8,617. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was off 74 points, or 7.5% to 911. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 94 points, or 5.4%, to 1,646. The S&P fell under a closely monitored support level of 960. A support level is important because it is supposed to trigger new buying. At those levels, the crash of 2008 has left the Dow 39% below its record close of 14,164.53 and the S&P 500 down 41% from its record close of 1,565.15. Ironically, both records were set exactly one year ago today.

“McCain needs to buy time on the networks.”

The LESS we see of McCain the better he does.

No reason it can't be both. Plus Putin is awash in PetroEuros.

True. Throw in Hugo & his buddies, the cocaine rich mobsters for good measure.

The terrorist is not one person. The terrorist is GREED.

Over the last ten years, greed made the leap from Gordon Gecko to Gordon Johnson of Peoria, Illinois.

Society is filled with the cancer of greed, and the bill is due. In ‘87, it was a handful of financial firms. Today, it’s almost every visible sector of the economy.

It’s greed for wealth (house-flipping, liar loans)
It’s greed for fame (reality shows, MySpace, American Idol)
It’s greed for convenience (abortion! euthanasia!)
It’s greed for dominance (cloning, embryonic research)
It’s greed for food (super-size-me, obesity, Costco)
It’s greed for power (character assassination, gossip)
It’s greed for status (my SUV is bigger than yours)
It’s greed for lust (alternative lifestyles, promiscuity, contraception)

GREED GREED GREED! It all comes to NOTHING! At the end of the day, and when the dust settles, we will have ourselves and our loved ones. And if we’re lucky, we have a job, a roof over our heads, and bellies that aren’t empty.

This is a seismic shift coming. People speak of God “punishing” or God lifting His protection. He doesn’t need to actively punish us. Our own greed punishes us by lifting the veil of illusion on the fallacy that man can live apart from God. Our society has gone from God-fearing to God-despising.

This is not America.

This is Sheol.

end rant here———>

For every share sold, there is a buyer. If you start hearing the dreaded “no bid”, you’ll know we’re in deep $hit...

Well said!

I have been quite aware of monetary greed.
But you did a superb job of pointing out the other forms.

I even admit there was a time I was ready to take a lug nut wrench to the next person in a car with a “My child was superstar of the month at....”!!!

But I got over it. The fact that people need their little vanities shows how out of touch we are.

I wouldn't be voting for McCain without Palin.

I'm not so much voting for McCain as I am voting against Obama. We're being asked to choose between bad and worse.

I wish it weren’t so. I am guilty of greed in my own way.

God have mercy on us all for throwing away the jewel of political systems and putting our comfort ahead of what is just. For living well beyond our means. For wrecking the future for our children.

If the global dominoes continue to fall, we will face 2009/2010 with a world at war. If the financial system totally goes kaput across the globe, resources will be king, and the resource-poor will take it by force if they don’t have the money to buy it with from the resource-rich. Russia/Georgia is a sneak peek. Wait until they shut the flow of natural gas for good on the rest of Europe.

I’ve been saying it for several months now that this problem will require an international solution. If there is no international solution, there will be international war.

lol! Have you ever tried reversing a boat while in a narrow channel? Well, it looks like the market, today. Looks like the market would prefer to be invested in another direction.

Not to worry, vote for the ticket promoting social justice & you can use other people’s money to do good.

“This is bad, really bad stuff for baby-boomers about to retire.”

Not for my baby boomer parents. My dad pulled out of the stock market many years ago. Bought land in N. Idaho 30 years ago, land in Las Vegas 18 years ago, and lots in Carson City, Nevada 15 years ago. Sold all lots for more than 5 times what he paid. Now has both homes paid for, a brand new 33 foot RV paid for, all cars paid for and a ton of money in savings. These along with his union pension and he’s doing pretty darn good for a retired construction worker. Lived frugally all his life and invested in land. I am trying my best to follow in his footsteps, minus any chance of ever having a union pension as an RN.

Which means the Democrats just opened themselves up to an effective campaign question:

“ARE YOU BETTER OFF TODAY THAN WHEN THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OFFICE IN 2006?”

I’m not so sure that would be a bad thing at this point. If nothing else, a lot of liberals would try their kumbaya solutions and get killed, solving the problem permanently.

That’s the third time that I’ve seen that posted. Someone did the math & opined that you’d have to have bought beer at 27 per can to get that kind of return.

That is true that the democrats are to blame for starting and continuing this fiasco. However I just read Bush’s speech from 2004 given to the building industry. In his speech he claims responsiblity for the “zero down payment intiative” and wanting to build an “ownership society”. He also proposed to congress government backed loans to those that CANNOT qualify for loans. He went on to say that he wanted to have 7 million more AFFORDABLE houses built. This administration also needs to take some blame for this debacle. Voting for the Constitution Party doesn’t look so bad afterall.
