Dr. Deal Hudson of "Inside Catholic" reports that Dr. Nicholas P. Cafardi, noted legal scholar, former Dean of Duquesne University Law School and now prominent Catholic supporter of the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama has just resigned from his position as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
Deal reports that the President of the University, Fr. Terrence Henry, TOR,received a letter of resignation from the former Dean on Monday, October 6, 2008. Cafardi was once hailed, along with fellow legal scholar Doug Kmiec, as a leading Pro-Life voice among Catholic academics.

I’d change that to Obama IS a rabid Pro-Abortion supporter. Have you seen what he wants to make law? Look up Obama & FOCA - it even goes as far as to repeal the ban on Partial Birth Abortion!

Do you find his reasoning above merely academic?
Perhaps Cafardi, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden and the serially adulterous and divorcing pro abortion-loving Kennedy’s can start a new “Cafeteria Catholic” church.
I'll go for "not very smart." He seems to believe his own drivel and have no sense of its inconsistency.
I’m sorry. I guess I missed that. Nonetheless, I doubt there will be any tearful farewells.
Everyone has choices to make. In this case his was the the Catholic teachings of Christ vs. the Obama values (or the lack thereof). Glad he put his card on the table.
There is always a way back.
Definitely a CINO.
Real Catholics vote for life. Life comes before liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
No life — nothing else follows.
This asks the cutting edge question: “Does a Catholic who votes for or supports Obama remain a Catholic?”
The ramifications of that question is a fierce declaration of faith, perhaps unmatched except in nations where it is a death sentence to declare oneself a Catholic.
It could almost reach the realm where Obama is so anti-ethical to the Catholic faith that he approaches being *an* Antichrist. Importantly, not *the* Antichrist, but that he worships at the altar of death, as an acolyte of the Antichrist. As repulsive to the Catholic church as the cult of Santa Muerte and the ancient pagans who practiced human sacrifice.
This would require the Catholic church to declare:
1) That Obama is abhorrent to the church.
2) That to support or vote for Obama is to turn from the faith.
3) That to support or vote for Obama is to reject the Communion of Christ, to reject the sacraments of the Church, and to reject the Catechism of the Catholic church.
4) That it calls on the other Orthodox churches to stand with the western church, and likewise renounce what is abhorrent to the faith and doctrines of all.
5) That Obama stands apart from the rejection of politicians who embrace beliefs anti-ethical to the church, because he vies to become “king” of a Christian nation. He becomes not only abhorrent in his beliefs, but abhorrent as a man. Christians cannot accept or honor his rule over them. He jeopardizes all Americans as a nation.
And their is precious little time for the Catholic church to make this announcement.
(Some of those usual suspects are right here on this website, and consider themselves to be conservatives.)
What that means is that the Church would never do that unless and until Catholics are being actively persecuted for their faith, and maybe not even then (because of fear of stirring the pot and causing more harm than good).
If you want to know how this policy developed, read up on the history of late 16th Century England and the Papal Bull Regnans in excelsis.
I don’t the Church will ever endorse candidates, and it shouldn’t have to. In fact, there were problems in South America related to the Church getting involved in politics.
It should be enough to declare what is right. Those who care will listen. Those who don’t apply the concepts will consider it a matter of ‘conscience’.
Most likely it was asked for. Franciscan U. is one of the handful of truly Catholic colleges left in the US.
I disagree, for the reason you gave, that Catholics are being persecuted directly, and worse, not the strong and healthy who can resist, but the unbaptized infants and the elderly. It goes to the very spiritual heart of the church to defend life against death.
Be it Elizabeth, or later Napoleon, or even Hitler, there was little that the church could do to stop tyrants, but in this one election, they might halt the rise of another champion of death. No doubt others would criticize Catholics for doing this, but to fear their criticism is worthless, they would and do despise Catholics in any event.
Certainly, "theft", "covetousness" and "false witness" are right up there, too. BO is a sound proponent of those four, for starters. (And I'm no expert on this, but I don't think that calling your grandma a "typical" white racist is in there with "honor thy father & mother", either - just a hunch)
Apparently, for ex-Professor Cafardi, rejecting tax increases is not just unpatriotic, but immoral too.
Still, I can't fault him for standing (conveniently) with Benedict's declaration of an "unjust war" in Iraq. But he makes an entirely unjustified jump from an interrogation process that he knows nothing about to "a euphemism for torture". Rather un-Christian of him, I'd say.
To the Hon. Chancellor More:
Thomas, old boy, I’ve decided to cast my vote for Henry VIII. Not that I don’t think his rejection and humiliation of his loyal and long-suffering wife isn’t a scandal, and his new affair with Boleyn, OK, it’s regrettable. But actually, the whole “Holy Matrimony” thing is a lost cause, and the idea that the Church should be independent of the Temporal Ruler is gonna get you nowhere.
The King’s men killing a bunch of monks and nuns and rosary-saying women and yeoman farmers: OK, it’s wrong, I deplore it, but then again it’s not such a big deal; that’s just the way it is these days.
Besides, Henry’ll do a lot for Social Justice. The Monasteries, for instance. They’ll be pulled down and looted, then redistributed -—to the Nobles, of course.
Sure, some blood will be shed: but Redistribution is Justice every time: you know that.
Do visit the Catholics for Henry & Anne website that me and Sir Kmiec set up. He’s been promised the position of Director of Progressive Religion in the new Administration, and I’ll probably be the new Chancellor, if you should happen to lose your head.
Hope & Change,
Count Nicholas Cafardi
Excellent!
