This asks the cutting edge question: “Does a Catholic who votes for or supports Obama remain a Catholic?”

The ramifications of that question is a fierce declaration of faith, perhaps unmatched except in nations where it is a death sentence to declare oneself a Catholic.

It could almost reach the realm where Obama is so anti-ethical to the Catholic faith that he approaches being *an* Antichrist. Importantly, not *the* Antichrist, but that he worships at the altar of death, as an acolyte of the Antichrist. As repulsive to the Catholic church as the cult of Santa Muerte and the ancient pagans who practiced human sacrifice.

This would require the Catholic church to declare:

1) That Obama is abhorrent to the church.
2) That to support or vote for Obama is to turn from the faith.
3) That to support or vote for Obama is to reject the Communion of Christ, to reject the sacraments of the Church, and to reject the Catechism of the Catholic church.
4) That it calls on the other Orthodox churches to stand with the western church, and likewise renounce what is abhorrent to the faith and doctrines of all.
5) That Obama stands apart from the rejection of politicians who embrace beliefs anti-ethical to the church, because he vies to become “king” of a Christian nation. He becomes not only abhorrent in his beliefs, but abhorrent as a man. Christians cannot accept or honor his rule over them. He jeopardizes all Americans as a nation.

And their is precious little time for the Catholic church to make this announcement.

They can't or else the Church will lose it's non-profit status. They can endorse issues, but not particular candidates.

That kind of stuff would be viewed as directly taking sides in the political life of a nation, and the usual suspects would set up the usual hue and cry that the Vatican is a sovereign country interfering in American affairs, that Catholics aren't real Americans because we have divided loyalties, etc.

(Some of those usual suspects are right here on this website, and consider themselves to be conservatives.)

What that means is that the Church would never do that unless and until Catholics are being actively persecuted for their faith, and maybe not even then (because of fear of stirring the pot and causing more harm than good).

If you want to know how this policy developed, read up on the history of late 16th Century England and the Papal Bull Regnans in excelsis.
