Good on ya rabscuttle385...gotta be a tad hard to be conservative on campus? Yep!
I saw the light after I got my very first paycheck for a summer job three years ago.

Like many people, I stumbled upon FR a long time back during the Whitewater days from the Whitewater link on Drudge. That's how I found it too. I heard about Drudge from the Sunday talk shows mentioning Monica Lewinsky checking the Drudge Report, and I had to find out what that was. I lurked for a while because at that time you couldn't register with a hotmail account. Now I spend too much time here. ; )

I found it from a reference in a story on WorldNetDaily in October of 1997 I think. It was small then, but very encouraging reading the posts.

Hiya AAC...amazing such a young site got so much attention in 2000.
I hadn’t found FR at that time but imagine it must have left a mark early on!

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION
The light of God surround you The love of God enfold you The power of God protect you The presence of God watch over you Wherever you are, God is, And all is well. Amen.
BLESS THIS HOUSE Bless this house O Lord we pray; Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout, Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall, Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright, Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there, with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within, keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we May dwell O Lord with thee.

IIRC correctly I was trying to find info about the Lewinsky affair on my webtv in early ‘98. I found a a link to FR somewhere and followed it!
I lurked for a long time, but hid the url under “COMEDY” to give me plausible deniability, just in case the government was keeping track of the internet!
I finally registered as Randy2u in Feb. ‘98!

In late June 2002 I read Ann Coulter's book "Slander." It took me about 3 maybe 4 nights to read it. I wanted to check out the site that was mentioned on page 118.
Her book came out I believe in the last week of June, or more likely the 1st week of July that year. I signed up on FR.com almost at once after I finished reading her book.
Quote from Slander page 118; "Freepublic.com---- A website that is wildly popular on the basis of the now discredited "consumer sovereignty principle."'
Somehow, I cannot remember how I 1st learned about Ann Coulter.

I turned to FR for the latest news on the recount...recount of the recount...recount of the recount recount...
I learned more about Gore, Clinton, Biden, Reid, Daschle, etc. from here. What I have always founf useful is that FReepers provide links and references to newspaper and magazine articles from accepted sources and not a bunch of conspiracy theory crap.

How did I discover Free Republic? Back in ‘96 or early ‘97, the head IT guy at our school suggested FR as a good source for news. I found many kindred spirits at FR and especially found the comments at the end enlightening and entertaining. Then, I got tired of merely reading the comments.
So, TEN YEARS AGO TODAY, I JOINED FREE REPUBLIC!
I’m not addicted. I can quit any time I want to leave. No trouble.
I’ve added two other members of the family to FR, JemiansTerror and LionsDaughter. The youngest is almost a member and often consults us as a resource in her political debates.

During the 2000 election during the endless Florida recounts and “pregnant chad” debacle. On the MSM I saw pics of Freepers holding up signs that said “get out of Cheney’s house” and “freerepulic.com”. I logged on and found sanity and have been here ever since.
